I use Advil for my PMS. It really relieves much of the pain. I also take Vitamin B complex for stress esp around this time. ~Ras~

I am on 50 mg Zoloft. it helps a great deal with anxiety and depression. it's a pretty low dose but it makes the world of difference. especially around pms, i used to feel so suicidal and horrid. also, i wanted to be off of them by january, but it has started to occur to me that i might actually need them for the rest of my life. looking at my mother's family mental history and all. i am still coming to terms with that possibility. which is alot easier than trying to survive the resulting growing pain.

just remember - what works for one doesn't always work for others.

I have two little boys close to me who are both bipolar, both were on depekote, but had to change to lithium. Depekote works for many.

there is no exact science to this, unfortunately - the brain chemistry and chemical makeup is a mystery.

the only real way to tell is to try it and see. sometimes meds work but the side effects are unbearable or intolerable - other times they just don't work.

I am on - BC pill - only one works - I have reactions to many types - zelnorm for my IBS, prevacid for acid reflux, strattera for ADD, and some med for my bad feet (it's a med for arthritis).

My mom takes many different meds - she has fibromyalgia - she takes nortryptiline (Sp?) for the depression and pain, but is also on hormone replacement, water pills, and blood pressure meds - as well as prednisone for polymyalgia...she also takes imitrex or excedrin migraine for her migraines.

mom hates taking so many meds and was often self medicating - regulating meds cuz she was sick of taking them and wanted off of them.

she went to the mayo clinic and they did a full work up on her and they said her doc had her on the right dosages and prescriptions and to stop self medicating and stay on what he said to.

as much as she hates taking them, she knows she needs them.

I am not sisto but just incase im glad it helps with both cause i think when i was taking lexapro it brought out that little side of me like the stupid family heritage cause when i was on lexapro i heard voices that told me to kill myself and now im not alowed to take lexapro or zoloft orpaxil or any of the sort thats why im on so many drugs is because i cant take those ones and i ahve multipule problems

don't be ashamed, embarrased or worried.

if they work, then be happy they work.

if you are worried tehy aren't working, then keep a diary of your dosages and the effects you think you notice on them. A written log can help you see patterns and behaviours and the doc can evaluate them easier than just a verbal account from memory that might be full of holes.

there are mood diaries online - would have to look to see if you can find them - when I was looking at bipolar - I think I found them in a search.

they do hour by hour accounts of moods - with a place to note what the issues were/are...as well as notes of why your moods might be off at that moment.

so, I hope this helps you.

I have ptsd, fibromyalgia, sleep apnea, and then other things that go off that. I am on 16 prescriptions for the various illnesses and some of the meds I am on are actually used for other illnesses it's just that they have found they work for me also. What meds you are on and how they work for you is different for each individual.

I'm glad you are searching RW. It's good to know what options there are. My docs have learned and gone w/ alot of what my input is based on the research I do myself on my illness. Docs have a patient every 10-15 minutes each day all day long. They don't have the time to research for most. So, what you do to help your doc will also help you.
Good work RW2.

mamaC I know this is off topic but I have only been here a couple of weeks and for some reason I thought Jigzy was with you and then I read the birthday thread and realized you are in different places. She is really on my heart and I have been praying for her. you are sooo good to her I was disappointed that you aren't in the same place- if this question seems inappropriate you don't have to answer.

In the beginning of my depression I went to a mentalhealth clinic, but those docs kept changing the meds every month and the SW advisors could not dig out of my history anything other than being emotionally abused and prescribed me divorce, which I thought was stupid. I thought that is what you get from individual counseling and quit going to those moneyhungry Drs and went back to my famdoc, who approved of my regime: trazodone prescribed for sleeping by him, buspar for anxiety, I do not know the name of prescribing Dr., Wellbutrin - another antidepresant. I been basically on them for 4-5 years. They work for me satisfactory, I can not always control my moods, but I consider that part of my sickness and if I need to bitch about something it usually arises when my feelings respond to criticism or judgement. My mind was not home when I asked famdoc to give me something for nervossness and got some addictive pills. My wife noticed difference in my behavior and asked me to get rid of them. I did. Now I am shuffling around on what is left, to find the best sequence in the day for using them, because I have other meds for heart, arthritis and... forgot the english term...I understand I will be on the meds for the rest of my life, never have thought much about suicide, I consider that an undesirable escape from life, for which you have to find meaning. It is not much for me at my age, but I feel it will have to do, my Higher power is in charge.

I have been on SO many different meds it's not even funny.
At one time I was taking:
150mg of Prozac
50 mg of Buspar(MY FAVORITE)
1200mg of Lithium(bi-polar)
50mg of tegretal
50mg of restoril for sleep,(good stuff-military uses it for fighter pilots-no morning after effects)
Klonopin but can't remember how much
THIS WAS DAILY! I was SO laid back, duh!

I would like to get back on the Buspar, I love it. It makes me so peaceful feeling....

Am only taking BC pills now and even after only 1 month I noticed my PMS was much less AGGGGHHHH this month~ LOL

Gayle:

What is the question? Is it are we in the same place. NO. I would take her in if there were any way possible but she has famly and they are not gonna give her up. As screwed up as things are I do believe her mom loves her. Oh, mom did go back into rehab to try and go off the drugs again. She missed her baby girl. Is that not the best birthday present Jigs could have received. 🙂

If that is not the question, then I don't mind you asking whatever. Jigsaw's Rainbow is a good thread to address things. Jigs does read that thread. If it is of sensitive nature use mamaC prayer up in libs. Thanks.

I have only been on meds for a year and a half now. I take 20 mg prozac for depression. I take 40 mg before and during my period. Although I have an appt with my doctor next week cause I think I need to switch. I've been in a major depression all week.

I understand that I'm going to get upset during life crisis. But when I'm calling in sick to work, because I can't stop crying, it is too much.

MamaC you answered my question. Thank you! Yeah it is and I hope that her mama makes it, I know Jigs needs her. I will keep her mom in my prayers as well. I saw on another thread that Jigs had to go to the hospital, that sweet baby! My heart goes out to her.

my diagnoses was PTSD with paranoid symptoms. This last one was the second breakdown in 6 years. My meds for now are Cymbalta, Risperadal, Klonipin,Inderal, and acouple of hormone replacement drugs. also occasional Ativan if I get to panicking which is less and less often. I tried Zoloft, Propanol and Buspar with very little success. This seems to be working fairly well.
