I am wondering if anyone knows the success rate for people who get arrested for crimes who have a drug and alcohol problem and placed in programs in prison?

destiny,

I don't know the numbers, perhaps you can find it on google or ask jeeves?

I DO know that it's not enough that it makes headlines...that most of the time, the failures are more predominant.

not to say it can't happen, but I think that the numbers may be small.

Destinystar -

For two years, I served as a chaplain for juvenile offenders in my State. I did not have much exposure to the "adult" prison population, so I cannot say much about their chances for overcoming their addictions and reentering society successfully, following incarceration.

However, in the juvenile offender population, the highest success rate was found in the Christian-based juvenile programs. The kids within the secular-based programs usoully wound up right back in the system, after release. But a high percentage of the Christian-based program juveniles NEVER returned to the system (in the vicinity of 70% which is quite high).

I offer no explanation or justification for these statistics, but you can probably check out the recidivism rates for your States prison system programs by going online. It is probably considered Public Record.

I know this might not compare, but have you ever watch the show Intervention. They go off and get the most expensive and best treatment. It's all filmed and yet 90% of them end up relapsing. But some do turn there lives around. I don't know much about the treatments they have in jail. I personally think it comes down to how much do they really want it. Many really prefer the "high" and think they can still get away with it. My ex-h had gotten in to so much trouble, so many relapses and trips to detox, half way house twice and right after getting out of six week stay of jail work release he started doing speed. He is now back in jail getting ready to get sentenced. Again, some do make it.

My husband got arrested for the first time in his life at the age of 42 and got convicted of a Felony for growing, cultivating marijuana with the intent to sell it. He had probation with work release. That was 8 mos. ago. He just violated probation, he got another charge for assault with a deadly weapon, took a plea bargain and got put away for a year (probably will only have to do half of that) in a county jail. They will put him into a program that teaches them vocational skills. He has no more than a 9th grade education, and was a pharmaceutical (MD perscriptions) drug addict. Addicted to morpheine (duragesic patches), oxycontin, vicodin. I was sooo glad they put him away. At least he cant do the drugs for a while. I have no idea whay he will do when he gets out. He has accepted responsiblity for his actions, admitted he needs to be in jail to get over his addiction. I just dont know what to do.
