Today was the first day of school for students in my district. For the first time in my 23 year teaching career, I am team teaching, which in and of itself is an interesting experience.

Some of the students that I am working with were in my special needs classroom when I taught at the Elementary school. Others recognize me from that building, and others have no idea at all who I am.

Today, when I was talking to the class and explaining rules and expectations the principal walked into the classroom. In the middle of my talk one of the new students looks up and at me and starts giggling and then says, "Hey, did you know that you have a heart at the end of your nose?" I looked at him, smiled and continued. He said, " No, I mean it Miss, Look at the heart at the end of her nose." I must have turned beat red because my face was hot.

One of the boys that I had in K, 1 and 2 spoke up and said, "That's because Ms.XXXXX, loves her students and really cares about them."

Hearing this, the new principal approached him and asked him how he knew this. He told her that I had been his teacher in elementary school. She looked at me and asked if this was so. I told her that this was my fifth year in the high school, but I was in the elementary school for the 6 years before. The boy added, "I had her for Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade, lots of us did." Hearing this, the principal asked the students who remembered me from the elementary school to raise their hand, all but three did.

She then asked if I was a good teacher. "D", and "A" told her that I was the best teacher they ever had and others shook their head in agreement.

It looks like I am off to a GREAT start!

Very nice! Even better than an apple for the teacher 🙂

The teacher I had in grade 5 -- and that was 40 years ago -- was a real anchor for me and made a huge positive impact on my life. My family got tired of hearing "Mrs. X says this" "Mrs. X says that" every hour of the day.... ! In retrospect I can look back and see how she nurtured me because she could see how much I needed it.

Sounds like you take full advantage of your position to bring a very positive influence into the lives of the children you teach. Hope the year goes well for you and all your students!

You know, Kroika and Confused, I had a fabulous teacher in 5th grade, too. She was a neighbor from up the street. I had such trouble with math, she tutored me patiently until I finally, finally GOT IT, then would give me rides home. She truly had a gift.

So important for kids to be heard and helped beyond boundaries.
