how do you gain back control without being to overbearing? you should have limits and boundaries but if they don't follow them what should you do?

Kandi, It depends on what the teenager is doing. If it's illegal stuff you report and allow them to suffer the consequences of that. If it's their behaviour in the home, you take away privilleges and stick to your resolutions. It's always helpful to know what their currency is and use that for consequences. In all of this try to have conversations and reason with them. Be very loving but firm. Let them realize that you are the authority and the buck stops with you.

All the best to you. I worked with teenager and I know they are quite challenging.

I will speak from my experience here, not saying i am right or wrong here but when I was young and did things that were wrong, like underage drinking, smoking, hanging out with the wrong crowd and etc, I did this cause the only person who loved me and paid attention to me, did these things, he was all I had and I did not want to lose the only attention and love I had in life, so I went along with it, it also helped me to get rid of the stress of constant bullying and abuse at school and home, it made me feel better and take the edge off...if only I had someone who cared back then who took me under their wing and said why not join us for a game or sport or something healthy here, I would of jumped at the chance but no one cared and no even noticed me, so I went where I felt I fit in and did things that almost killed me, cause who wants to be alone? Noone...so I understand very well why some kids hang out with other wild kids, and do the things they do, they think there is no one else and nothing else left for them in life and that this is what they deserve deep down, how sad...I know, its beyond sad really.
