Oh, Ma, I hope you don't mind, but I've cut and pasted your story to share. I LOVED it. You are amazing. "Handed the father my business card" - great. Yeah, take it up with my Boss, jerk!

Here's Ma's tale...

"Just a couple of weeks ago, I "rescued" a 17-year-old young man from his father's household. The father is an alcoholic/pill abuser. Every time he drank, he would beat up his son. The kid showed up at our front door one night with a broken hand (from defending himself from the drunk father). So, I went over to his house (with one of my big, strong sons), packed the kid's clothes, computer and school books, handed the father my business card (I am a minister) and informed him that his son would be living with me from now on.

Amazingly enough, his father has not fought me on this and the boy is now living in a home where he has his own room, peace, safety, an affectionate woman to watch over him and the friendship of the other 3 young men living here (my two sons and their best friend who is a youth minister).

I am so glad that this young man has been blessed into my life, despite my circumstances. And I know in my heart that all will be well."

Wow.

Geez-o-flip...

Got to admit that I am turning red in the face. I am quite certain that almost everyone I know and love on these threads would have done the same for ANY kid being abused or mistreated.

I spent the past 72 hours, caring for a detoxing alcoholic. (My entire household helped.) It was my first such experience. Tremors, vomiting, sweating, nausea, more vomiting, terrible head pain, anxiety, insomnia...it went on and on for three days and nights. But it is over and the alcoholic was able to eat, bathe and take a walk in the bright sunshine today. I remember a teacher once saying that we can only change the world, ONE PERSON AT A TIME. But we CAN change it. I always loved that outlook.

So, I guess you could say that I love my "work."

I would bet we could start up a thread, sharing stories about all the lives so many of us have touched and it would inspire and encourage HUNDREDS of us to press on.

Hugs to you all...

Ma Strong

The rescued boy is doing wonderfully. The first days were difficult for him. He was in a strange environment, living with "new" people. Plus, he had to endure resetting of the broken bone in his hand because his father had refused to seek medical treatment for the poor kid, until I cornered him and FORCED him to do so. So, the first week was tough for him. Understandably. He rarely smiled, looked down a great deal (instead of making direct eye contact) and seemed very anxious.

Today, he is like a DIFFERENT PERSON! He laughs, clowns around with the other young men here. Makes jokes. Pitches in on the household chores with a willing, cheerful spirit. Has long, quiet talks with me. We do LOTS of hugs. He knows we love and accept him. And the love and approval and protection and praise are CHANGING HIS LIFE...MENDING HIS HEART. It is a joy to see him opening up and blossoming...healing from all the terrible wounds which his father's abuse inflicted upon his soul.

I am so happy to have him here with us. He is a blessing and a joy...one of the family. I am already anticpating how deeply we will miss him when he leaves for college in August. But this will be the home he returns to, whenever he has a school holiday/break.

Thank you so much for asking about him. I will be happy to keep all of you updated. Thank you for your prayers on his behalf. He is living a much better life for which I am deeply thankful. His gratitude is beyond words. You would all LOVE him.

Wow,

Great work, ma!

Being in a healthy environment will do a lot to help this young man heal.
