Yesterday, my sister who has special needs turned 20 and I sometimes get sad and down when I think about her life. It isnt that she has a bad life but its the fact that she cant be at home always, with us. At home she becomes hyper and very hard to take care of. I really hate not having her at home and wonder is there anyone in the same/similar situation. Please, anyone can I have your advice

cb...I am curious about how old you are?

I have been in the special ed. field for 25 years now.

At age 20, even if your sister was "normal" (if there is any such thing) she would be approaching or already be living away from home.

Does your sister seem happy where she is living? That is the key. That and you may want to observe what happens at home that would make her be more hyper than where she lives at.

don't feel bad for her if she is happy. It is fair for you to miss her, wish she could be home more often etc. what a nice sister she has.

Have you thought about visiting her?

cb,

May I ask, what special needs does your sister have? My sister, who is 40 years old has been diagnosed in having bipolar disease(Manic-Depressive). She has had a persistent mental illness for about 20 years now. I love her to death, but have a very hard time dealing with her. I am a member of NAMI NJ which is a support group for family members affected by serious brain disorders. Have you ever thought of joining a support group? I maintain their website...if you are interested in going to it...Here is it

Hang in there!
