I have a question. If the benzodiazepines like valium, xanax and ativan are controlled substances because of addictive properties, why is it any different if you put someone on antidepressants for the rest of their life, or if you put them on a medication you have to be "weaned" off of? How is that different at all?

ok I will try this again, I had a good reply but I was kicked off the net, damn ISP.

We had that discussion in my psych class last semester, we were talking about the addictive properties of drugs, physical and psychological. While it is not as liekely to become physically dependant on anti-depressents, you can very well become psychologically dependant, But then that once again raises the question of why must you be weaned off of them? That is a good question for my incompetant Dr.

Cici, its western medicine at its best, and look at all the money every one is making of us. This argument is exactly what the methadone clients used to bring up. After a point and with the correct dose, it is no different than a diabetic, the system needs it. Ok, society has an issue with methadone, but what about naltrexon ? They expect them to take it for ever, or blood pressure meds, no one has figured out how to fix it, just medicate it, and they can never get off it again. then there are pills for all the side effects, what about durietics, water pills, know how many people are dependent on those ? I don't know of any one that has taken an anti depressant for over one year that felt normal when they quit taking it. I swear we are all a bunch of experiments, that others profit off of with out any consideration of the long term consequences, and as long as the bill is paid no one seems to care.
