I wish I was old enough to say that I invented procrastination... but I think it would be accurate to say that I've made procrastination my bitch. Or, I will as soon as I get around to doing it. I have some ideas about how to deal with procrastination... I'll write them here later when i remember what they were.

i read an excellent article on proccas.
there are many reasons why we procas, and for me it was that i am a perfectionist so i am afraid to do anything just for the fear or failing to do it properly and 'perfectly'.

Hey sometimes I think my perception of how "together" other people must have it is way off base.

But I have a theory that procrastinators like myself have two conflicting issues, fear of failure and fear of success. You develop such an aversion to how much you focus on how your performance will be judged that you associate that aversion with doing the work itself, even though doing work in manageable sections at a time can be gratifying because you have that "look I did something I actually needed to do EARLY" feeling.

Heck, here I am still busting my buns to finish a paper due Thursday so there you go, ha ha.

Fear of failure and fear of success--that's kind of like running around and around in circles with one shoe nailed to the floor.

I've always said that I'm my own worst enemy--that I could accomplish great things if I could just get out of my own way.

Procrastination to me is a kind of paralysis--like being a deer mesmerized by the headlights of an oncoming car--something is needed to break the grip of that fear--to shake things up before I get run over.

Whatever your avoiding--just do it--I know it sounds like a Nike commercial but that's the only way to start yourself moving--don't think--don't make a list--just take a deep breathe and JUMP!!
--And now , I'm going to stop procrastinating and do what I've been avoiding.
Later.
Artist.

OK. It's monday morning now, I have a 10 page paper due tomorrow that I haven't typed one word for. I also have my final film project to shoot in the next 2 days, for which I only have a vague idea of what I want to do... no storyboards done or scripts written. I also have a paper due on friday that I haven't even looked at the assignment sheet for.

Psychologically the reason I procrastinate is because that lowers everyone else's expectations of me. It sets the bar lower so that I never have to do exceptional work. And that's the way I like it

Here's what I do when procrastinating... say I really don't want to clean out the refridgerator (because there are live things growing in there) and so, instead I do something else housework related (like vaccum) - at least i don't havge to clean out the fridge!

Or, say I should be making some art, so instead I play music, then relax about the art, and am amble to do it then.
