There are lots and lots of theorys. But it starts with listening.
Looking at the situation, and allowing the vent. A non biased person, who can help you look at the what happened, and help you to formulate the choices that you can choose for resolution, while examing the potential consequences of the choice. If it is marriage counseling it is the same, but the counselor acts as a mediator too. In many ways it is like paid friendship, from an educated non biased friend. I like Alan Watts books, as well as Dr. David Viscott, and Glasner, I think that is how you spell his name. It is often different than analysis, or advice, analysis will take you back in history even to your parents wombs, and advice for one doesn't always work for the other. Are you in need, or questioning your counselor ?

In England you don't actually need to have a counselling qualification to practise. I know, it's desperately bad. Anyone can advertise themselves! Luckily things are changing and the British Association for Counselling is getting itself heard and potential clients are looking to the BAC for guidance. I am on a three year course/diploma. I am a mature student and so didn't have to have any other qualifications to begin study.
For the final diploma year you do have to be in personal therapy every week and also in a work placement situation.

I actually did my first year over two years which really helped me to get back into study. Once I have attained my diploma and started working properly as a counsellor I will then go on to do a degree and a masters.

I know it's different for people in the states. A friend told me that you have to study for a degreee first. Over here, there aren't so many paid/professional positions as there are voluntary positions. Many counsellors work part time and have another part time job in a different area of life.

Achied,
I would say, write to the Association for counselling in your home country and ask them for advice. It's difficult via e-mail to know where someone is from. Molly's posting is right though!
