I've written 1/10 of my novel and I'm really enjoying it. I tried writing it in Spanish but I couldn't express myself as well as in English, so I am writing it in English, though Spanish is supposed to be my mother tongue.

I have been looking for a writers' workshop, but finding one in English is extremely difficult. All workshops are in Hebrew here. I am not remotely as good expressing myself in Hebrew.

I got the phone number of the President of the Association of Writers in English, who conducts writers' workshops in English. And I'm scared of calling her, she'll hear my Spanish accent and she'll go "who do you think you are, writing in English as if it were your language? !" and I'll be so ashamed ! Then I'll say "...I think I can express myself ok in English" and she'll say my writing in English sounds odd and not natural, and I'll dieeeeee of shame !!!!

You're the only people I trust will tell me the absolute truth: does my English sound odd ? Can you hear a foreigner's tone ?

Please tell me the truth, I count on your feedback. Thank you sooo much in advance !

Duh....mafi!!!! JUST LOOK AT YOUR POST!!! It's in ENGLISH, darling!!!

It's clear as a bell.

They say that for every language you speak you live another life. This is an added dimension to you.

Be proud and go for it! Are there online workshops also to add to that one? The more you expose your work to critique the better.

Hurry up so we can read your book!!!

love,
camper

Hey mafi try this;

"And I'm prepared to call her, she'll hear my Spanish accent and she'll go "wow what a talented person, writing in English as if it were your language? !" and I'll be so excited ! Then I'll say "...I think I can express myself ok in English" and she'll say "your writing in English sounds wonderfully natural", and I'll jump for joy !!!!

Goodluck - I'm with the others - its the absolute truth!!

I'm so grateful to you guys !!!

I called her and she didn't make any comments about that, but at the end of the conversation, when the ice broke, she hinted she'd like to know how come I write in English. She was so polite and delicate about it, I was puzzled. Then I realized it's because she's an Anglo-Saxon and not an Israeli, of course ! LOL

She said there are no critique workshops in English in our country nowadays, but she'll try to form one. For the time being, I'm so glad there is the internet !

Sorry Mafi,

I understand you perfectly clear. I always had the idea you were either American, or if you lived in a foreign country and I only gleaned that because you were talking about the court system, so I figured you might have gone to an American school, or moved to where ever you are some point in your life.

So... write on!

Love,
Zinnie

I don't realize any grammar or spelling mistakes in your posts. But then I propably wouldn't, since I'm not a native speaker.

To me a lot of your post sound quite cool and calculated, compared to others writing here. But I don't know if that's you or an extra thought that goes into the language. And it seems to change over time and get more spontaneous now. Again I don't know - this might be you, or it might be the language?

Eve,

That's what I wanted to say too. That my English sounds to ME too calculated (I'm an English Linguist and teacher). Forums and reading on the internet is helping to relax it, I hope. I don't have any grammar or spelling mistakes (can't have them because that's how I earn a living !). It IS extra thought that goes into the language, but it's the same in any language for me. It's just important for me and I like language in general. Thanks for the honest sharing and for taking the time to observe and comment in detail. It's VEEERY important to me !

What's your mother-tongue?

I'm German. I learned English in school and by working in England, and in an English speaking company in Austria.

And of course by holydays in England, Scotland, Wales and Canada - all of the places I've been to were special and extremely beautiful. Haven't really been to the USA yet (only to an airport). Have you seen Britain or Northamerica?
