My understanding there are different kinds of therapies/therapists. How does one go about picking out the right kind of therapist or therapy.

WHICH side of the fence are you looking at? Are you asking from a client's view or a counselor's side? There are several theories and the therapist uses the one that he has more expierence in. An eclectic therapist will use parts of the different theories till he/ she finds one that helps the client go forward in the process. It is at the therapists discretion to decide which road to lead the client"s way of thinking so they will help themselves to recovery. Hope this helps.

HI! I am a clinical psychologyst and for my training I have been in therapy for more than 6 years. The issue of picking a therapist is big and important. Maybe it will help if you can research a little about the different types of therapies and go for the one who feels better for you....trust your instincts.
I think the most important thing is feeling comfortable with your therapist and with the way she manages the sessions. Most of the time the first session with a therapist is free so try some and stay with the one you feel better.

Good luck
