Do you think that it is possible for a person to commit a sexual offense only once? This person was highly inebriated (not that it matters)and no actual penetration took place. The problem is that it was his 8 .y.o. She told everything and it has all been handled through the courts. What I read contradicts itself. Can you offend once and have it really be just that, a horrible, tragic mistake?

NO!!

This is the first time he was caught. I'm willing to bet a lot of money, it wasn't his first time and definitely wont be hos last.

I’d be interested to know what were the things you read that contradicts itself, before I offer an opinion.

makushla,

I guess the only way I could answer that one is from a personal perspective; I am a man in my 40's and I have NEVER, even one time, considered crossing that line. The desire to do so has never crossed my mind drunk or sober.

I agree with Cary. In my opinion, people do when they are drunk what they are inclined to do when they are sober but don't out of fear of consequences, shame, guilt, etc.

Being drunk does not "turn" someone into a pedophile. It only lowers your inhibitions to do what you may not have done sober.

I believe one either has those tendencies or they don't.

I totally agree with the above. Being drunk is just an excuse and is not a good one there is no excuse for it. It wouldn't hold up in court either. Just like injuring someone while drunk is still battery or assault. Abusing someone while drunk is still abuse.

When I told my Mom that my stepfather molested me, she asked me how did that happen because my stepfather was a diabetic and impotent (no penetration).

My Mom said this because it was to step aside from what I was telling her. It is inappropriate for an adult to touch a child in a way that makes that child uncomfortable in any fashion. Please keep this child away from this individual because you will be validating what this 8 year old told you. If you keep this individual around, you are adding danger to her life.

Being drunk might make people feel more sexually driven by lowering their inhibitions, but it is never acceptable to chose a child to relieve those feelings. That is pedophilia no matter what. If his drunkeness had brought him to a state of arousal, he could have just as easily masterbated or found a grown person, heck, even hiring a prostitute is a better option than touching a child.
