Thought I would start this thread so we can talk about the healthy relationships we have with our animals. I love animals. All of them. Even green mojave rattle snakes. I have a pony and a pit bull (or something that laid next to one). I have a Timber wolf that stays on my friends property (my friend wont part with her).

I would love to hear about animals in your life.

Your pony sounds very fun, whether she canters or not. (Our "token pony" at the trainer's barn is the same exact way!) And I understand what you mean about the hackamore now... I always picture those AWFUL mechanical hacks that people use on the barrel horses and think "ouch!"

Pet therapy is more than likely one of the only reasons I am here today. The old "pasture ornament" was my brand new youth show horse when I was 15 and my mother died, and she absorbed those tears every day! The current show gelding absorbed all the tears from when my xbf completed suicide a year and a half ago. So yes, I'm a believer!!!

Btw, for groundwork and desensitizing, there is no one like Clinton Anderson! Check him out: http://www.downunderhorsemanship.com. He's cute too!

Happy horse lover, dogs, and pretty much all other living creatures.

Glad to see this thread up again, I agree that pets, all of them are a great form of therapy... and use them for such in my program.

What a good idea! Its easy when we are down to forget what to be thankful for, and no matter where we are at, out pets are loyal. They are wonderful creatures (although I personally disagree with the snakes!! lol).

I have 3 dogs, fish, a cat. My cat is sparkles because we got him on the 4th of july in 2000, so my son, only 6 then, wanted a 4th of july name - like sparklers!

I used to have a cockatiel - would love another one. He was cool! And my friend that came over to watch the other pets when on vacation, said that Kiko was a good guard bird - definately made a lot of noise when she came over!

My bf and I have another fur baby: a little kitty. When we first started dating, I got it in my head that we should have something together... for whatever reason it gave me a sense of security to see if he could give me that commitment. Maybe not the best or most accurate way to do so... but that was before my mental health had improved, lol!

And at any rate it all worked out, because we love our little guy!

Camer what kind of babies do you have? My dog is nice to snuggle up with at night. I just have to keep her from licking me so much. Our town is having a pet thing put on by the vets office and groomers. I am going to go and see what I can see. Nothing like spending quality time with the pets.

TO ALL- My pit growls at small children and tries to go after them the same thing with small dogs. It is next to impossible for me to restrain her.

Sooo, I bought her a muzzle a cloth one. She immediatly pulled it off with her front paws and ate it.

Any recommendation in regards to a muzzle that she could wear that would prevent her from biting. I went to the local pet shop and they had a plastic one. She would need a strong one made of leather and steel. But then people say she wouldnt be able to breath.

Destiny,

I have no idea on what to tell you with your pit growling at small children or going after them. I don't know much about training dogs, but be careful.... that isn't good at all... I'm sure you already know this otherwise you wouldn't have posted this question..:)... Have you been able to talk to a dog trainer or someone that has a lot of knowledge on aggressive behavior?

It certainly sounds as though you may have your hands full with her, and her this problem.

Maybe you could call vet and ask them what type of mussle... just a suggestion... sorry I can't really advise on what else to do, I just really don't have the experience to offer too much.

I love animals. I have a 3 year old Jack Russell..Well my son now has her and I get to see her often. I also have a 9 year old toy poodle, whom just lets me hug him and walk him and pet him and kiss him and he has been a saving grace in the last year for me.

I love all animals...welll maybe I don't like snakes so well.:)

Destiny - I recommend looking into any of Cesar Millan's books and watching his TV show, in addition to seeking the aid of a professional. The muzzle will help in the short term, but in the long term she requires re-training, while the muzzle is more like a bandaid on a wound that needs lots and lots of stitches.

Our kitty, Capone, is cracking me up lately. He too, loves to lick and will start licking my face at night sometimes and won't stop until we lock him out of our bedroom. We are so ridiculous that last night we were talking about how he should be a "kitty model" because he's so pretty.. but of course we're a little biased!

Healing- I am going to put her in her huge cage and take her to the pet shop and ask this wise older gal that used to work for animal control what to do.

Zebra- Pits and Jack Russels are both terriers and behave similar. Good watch dogs, hyper, love to play.

RobynB- I would watch TV but we dont have one. My dog is a licker so I turn her head towards my feet at night and hide them.

Pets-they are so wonderful. They provide us with unconditional love. My pets don't care how insane I am. They show love for me on good days and bad. Sometimes at the end of a hard day at work, its nice to come home to excited faces, licks and love. I love my pets. I stay in an emotionally abusive relationship which has worn me to the bone out of love and responsibility for my pets. I have gone overboard. I think when things were really bad in my life, I got a new pet. Not really a hoarder, I take care of my pets, just ask my vet! One of my dogs has had repairs on both knees, one had $1200 bladder stone surgery... Anyway, I have 5 dogs, 2 cats, 2 parrots and a cockatiel, at my house. I also have a horse that I board. I stay so I don't have to disown my pets. I took on the responsibility of having them. I can't just get rid of them out of convenience. One of my dogs is 10 years old, how do I just give her away? That would break both our hearts. My youngest dog is 3. I really got in over my head with the parrots. I've attempted to sell the horse due to financial difficulties but no one else seems to have extra $ for pets either. I tried to sell one of the parrots and I wound up backing out at the last minute. I just couldn't do it. So now I'm torn. I'm miserable but I love my pets too much to change that. Going overboard seemed to happen overnight and I never consciuosly imagined the level of responsibility I would endure. I love them all but I feel so strapped. When I get home from work, its an hour just watering, feeding and changing bird paper. I just wanted to vent, thanks for listening.

castoff- I can understand how hard that would be if you depend on someone to be with your pets.

My situation was when I left I took my pony to paradise (compared to where we were). I rode her and was with her a lot and around horses all day and that really helped me let go of my X. My X interefered with having quality time with my animals. He was mean to them, jealouse of them, I get mad whenever I think about it. Now I can have the dog I want and she can sleep with me in bed. I can also enjoy my pony in peace and get the animals what they need.

At least I enjoy my time with my pets and I NEVER enjoyed my time with my X.

(((castoff)))

This is a tough economy to sell a horse in, that's for sure. I have 2 and one is a pasture pet. It's terrible feeling resentment toward her over money when she spent 14 yrs being my rock whenever something bad happened, which was a lot.

Just take heart in knowing you can do it and provide for all these critters... and if the right homes come along, don't be afraid to let go if you can... sometimes it's important to think about the animal's sake before our own.

I have 2 horses, 1 cat, and 1 guinea pig, and the only one in my soul care is the little oinker, and I still hardly have time to hug and kiss him, lol. So I understand where you are coming from...

But everytime I think about trying to place my furry friend in a new home with my relatives or in a school, I suddenly remember those cold nights when he was the only one who would sit around and watch TV with me, and then I feel renewed!
