I want to ask anyone in a relationship if they've ever had a time with their partner that there was nothing to talk about. It bothers my boyfriend when we can't flow with conversation......but he doesn't understand that when lives are routine, there's really nothing great to talk about. We've been going out for a while and this issue doesn't mean we have a bad relationship...
Can anyone relate to this? It bothers me that it really annoys him.

What a gift to be so comfortable with another that words (which can be sooff the subject) are not necessary. To be comfortable and feel so as ease that talk is not nec.

People who are not comfortable with silence usually are not comfortable with themself, or they have never experienced the sound of silence as a child, or the sound of silence as a child meant something bad. A lot can be said for silence between two people. Just sitting comfortably, holding each others hand and breathing. What wonderful way to spend time. Just letting your spirits do the talking, in silence. I hope your boyfriend reaches the peace within to be comfortable in the gift of silence between you. Anyone can talk, some can communicate, few can be at peace in silence.

It's a cultural thing. My Father is Cherokee and white. In many Native American cultures, silence is seen as a symbol of respect. After someone has said something important or respectful, everyone sits in silence, pondering what was just said. But Americans and most Western Europeans consider silence to be awkward. Personally, I talk too much.

I agree with Spirit. People uncomfortable with silence don't like the sound of thei rown thoughts. Every night my fiance and I set aside some cuddling time where we just lay in each others' arms quietly and just spend some time physically being close. It's a great bonding experience. Sometimes, it's after sex. Other times, it's spur of the moment, on the couch or in the afternoon. You can express so much more in those times being silent nad close than just talking. Pillow talk is great, but nothing beats that quiet bonding.

Christie,

I think it is important for your boyfriend to know exactly what is on your mind. Maybe he's nervous about starting a conversation. I think there's always something to talk about........but if you think to hard, natural conversaion won't flow. Just try to relax and chill......and once the ball is rolling, conversations will spin off from each other.

There are times when silence is a blessing. Once you are married, for me anyway, you somehow know what each other is thinking a lot of the times. And you know what a certain movement means. We sit there together and watch a movie and just be together. I love it. There are times when talking is too much and not talking is just perfect.
