I am writing a paper on why people discriminate those who are different then themselves. I would appreciate any personal opinions/stories relating to this topic or any good websites/ reading material on it

Thank you. You can post it here or email me at [email protected]

My two cents worth is - it's about fear and ego.

Fear because people are not comfortable with anything that does not agree with the image they have of themselves. They find comfort in numbers and when a "group conscience" is in place - accountability seems to go out the window as far as moral codes are concerned. A group has far less conscience than one person does. Groups feel safe in what they do, the larger the no., the more illicit things they feel safe and justified in doing.

People's egos or lack of "good ego/self esteem also drives them to not being okay with diversity. They don't accept themselves - so why would they want to accept anyone else that is drastically different from them. They attack that diversity - because they can't accept - who they, themselves are. Funny how we project things onto other people, isn't it? Sort of like throwing your garbage out the back window and hitting someone else's yard with it!

The people that I have met in my life who are not prejudiced, who have an open mind, full of respect - are the very people who are very comfortable with who they are, who have spent much time being self aware, and done a ton of work on themselves, they aren't egotistical and have quite a bit of balance about their lives, full of grace - so to speak.

So, yep, I'd say - fear and ego - are two big factors.

Ah yes....but ignorance is when someone just doesn't have the information or the know how to be any other way... What you describe is just outright - evil, where people know and choose to do otherwise for their own illicit purposes. If this is called discrimation - I'm with you - 100%.

But, I think discrimination is just people hating - just to hate - because they are fearful little people looking to ease their own pain by hurting someone else. That's not what - you're talking about, at all.

I stopped calling some people ignorant a long time ago....people choose what they are for the most part....and when someone who wants to live a life of integrity and - gets some knowledge waved at them - they grab it and go forward, when people who don't want to see, who want to be quite wicked - turn away from any knowledge including the mirror - quite on purpose... I have a strong, strong bias against such myself.... These people I very much consider - enemy/predator. And for people know and do nothing - is ever bit as lethal as the one with the gun in their hand.

Yeah, I love diversity...as long as people are respectful. Love to learn new things and just think the uniqueness about all of us as people is so very wonderful. Keeps me from thinking inside the box and hopefully does the same to other people. Checks and balances sort of thing. Keeps life interesting!

But, then you look at the maniacs we're dealing with now and it's just such a shame....the whole of Islam is not represented here. Just like most Christian evangelists on T.V. don't come close to representing a true christian's heart...

Nuts are always falling out of the tree and saying "I'm an Oak!" when in all reality they're a peanut and a rotten one to boot.
