Hi.. I'm new in here.. I just found this a few min ago.. I see myself in many others posting in here.. I've really had it and can't deal with anything or anybody anymore.. I keep saying I should get counseling especially to help me now deal with my 18 yr old who herself can't deal with her father anymore.. I'm dying to get help at least for beginners for her.. but don't know where to start!! I have no recommendations other than what my insurance Co. gives me of a list of names.. ( I never had or knew anyone that dealt with counseling) So, you see I don't know who should I be looking for? A Psycologist? Psychaitrist? or a social worker ? Have no idea!! Should I send my daughter to a Pediatric one or a regular one? should we all see the same one or different ones? Am so confused but everyday when I see her deppressed and wishing to die I get scared and don't know how to handle her anymore ! I need proffessional help I think it's time..
Please someone give me detailed answers to my questions in here..
Forever I'll be gratefull...
Thank you..

Flo:

First of all, let me say that you and your daughter are not alone. All of us in this thread have been on the edge of despair. We have all felt like there would be no end to the feelings of helplessness.

Do you work? I went through my employer's Employee Assistance Program for referral to a therapist. If you have that resource, that is a good beginning. If not, then try your state's mental health department. The main thing is that you get help for your daughter as soon as possible. She is 18, and that is an age where she is no longer a child, but not an adult yet. That alone can cause confusion for her. You must get out the yellow pages, call some friends, talk to your pastor, or someone. But please do something now.

Please keep me informed of how you are doing. You and your daughter are in my thoughts and prayers.

Toby

Flo...there are crisis hotline's in most towns and they would have a list of places that could help you. When I was in need of finding a good counselor I went to my family doctor and asked her to recommend one to me. The one she did was a federally granted one that went on a sliding scale...they were great!

Good luck to you and your daughter and I too am praying for you both.

Thanks so much Toby and Kthomas. You kind of give me the courage to go ahead and make this phone call.. everytime I tried to pick up the phone and call my insurance Co to get the refferal, I kind froze and wasn't able to pick up the phone.. God gave me the courage today and I made the call and called the someone already but they havne't got back to me yet.. but I think I feel more comfortable with it now..
A question though, since my insurance person recommended that I talk to the counselor first and see if I like her or him first before I go or send my daughter... Now what do you ask in particular or talk about on the phone? or look for ? Sorry, I sound so dumb and Naiive but I never did this before and all I know is when I need an appointment from a doc. I just call and make the visit and judge from there even after anyone's recomendations...
I probably am not getting a call till tomorow, so I would appreciate any info or advice anyone could give me..

Please keep me and daughter in your prayers...

Thans......

Hi Flo,

I went through a process like you through the ins. co., I spoke to I think 3 different places...

It is hard to know over the phone. You just tell them what help you and your daughter need...set up an appointment for both you and your daughter together...they may talk to you together and then each alone. You may not like the first counselor you go too...or she may not...and that is okay...just like a regular doctor...you have to feel comfortable. Some people have had to switch counselors more then once so please do not get discouraged.

I am praying for you both....

Keep in touch.

Karin
