I know someone who self abuses... this person is a high functioning person, yet in down time self abuses to an extreme. She is in counselling, has tried meds and psychiatric care...nothing seems to be working for her. She has one life crises after the other ...Her husband left her, kids leaving for college, financial difficulties and so on, I do not know how to help her she is slowly losing the energy to fight this thing and I fear that she will go from self abuse to suicide. Any help, suggestions or comments will be appreciated.

Sounds familiar,
I can tell you honestly, I am a self abuser since young till today.Whenever, I am face with crisis,I torture myself.I will drink and drink, till i throw out. There was once,or twice i was sent to hospital due to too much drinking.I can tell you it is hell. I will try to use physical pain to overcome my mental pain.Scary right?I have thought of suicide, but never attempt it.There is something holding me back.At present it is my daughter.
I am afraid to say that nobody can help her except herself. But,you can talk to her more often.Input some possitive thoughts will help too.
You may like to check up from the web for some professional advises.
I sincerely hope that your friend will put throught this stage.
All the best!

hope-c,

Sometimes a different therapist has new insights and could be a better fit for your friend.

If her present therapy isn't helping, it may be helpful to suggest searching for someone new who specializes in self abuse.

However, her therapy may be helping more than she thinks... and it's usually best to talk with the current therapist about looking for someone new. The therapist is ethically obligated to help with a referral.

Thanks for your comments. I do attempt to be her support system, but honestly at times it is more than one person can handle. I have recommended clergy to her, support groups, medication...She has two therapist actually because the first felt exactly like SC said. I pray she will be able to break free from this. Thanks again for your comments.
