I was told recently that there is a medication for anxiety that a person can take as needed, rather than daily. For example, as soon as s/he felt an anxiety attack coming on, they could take a medication to alleviate the symptoms and counter the impending attack. Has anyone heard this? Is this an actual possibility?

uh - they've been around for many years.

Benzodiazapines:

Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan, halcion, tranxene, librium, paxipam, prosom, restoril, serax, etc...

These are second generation prn (take as needed) anti-anxiety (I think the technical term is anxiolytic) drugs. Prior to this I believe that barbituates were prescribed (secobarpital, Phenobarbital - like seconal was the generic term? for one of them? there were like 5 or 6)

Most psychiatrists are VERY reluctant to prescribe these long term. They are highly addictive. They can get you "high", and you can overdose and kill yourself.

Many times depression and anxiety go hand-in-hand, especially when someone suffers from panic attacks, because you begin to feel learned helplessness as you perceive that you have no control over the very overwhelming and frightening panic attacks.

There are a multitude of other, safe, non-addictive psychoactive medications that are used to treat anxiety, but none of those are PRN. Buspar is one, and I think that they use the antidepressant Paxil very often - usually psychiatrists use the anti-depressants that have sedating side-effects with anxiety patients. I think.

There are also a multitude of cognitive-behavioral therapies, like PMR (Progressive Muscle Relaxation) and self-hypnosis, which can be taught in the therapeutic setting, or group counseling session, or if you have the confidence in yourself you can do some research and try it out for yourself.

This is entirely at the discretion of your mental healthcare provier, however. If you do get 'scripts, they are limited to 30 or less at a time, usually with no refills so you have to visit your psychiatrist again to get a refill - these are all safeguards to the VERY real threat of abuse.

Hope this info helps. I did a lot of research on this when I was suffering from severe panic attacks - once I got to the root cause of the anxiety, the panic attacks disappeared.
