If one grew up in a home with 5 other people and 4 of them were mentally Ill, You would grow up thinking that they were "normal", and so you would think behave like them and become mentally Ill,and then you realize that they were not "normal". So I guess I am asking if there is any possible way that this person would ever be "normal" Or mabye one is really mentally ill and will never be "normal" but how do you know? I always thought that you would'nt know it if you were Ill, But someone close to me is schrophrenic and he definetly knows it. How do you change the way you think and behave? Is illness really genetic or enviromental or both? If it is both then I am really screwed.

Most forms of severe mental illness have a multitude of causes. Schizophrenia is largely genetic, but there has to be a trigger for decompensation, as they call it. The affected person often first experiences the onset of schizophrenia during a stressful time in his life. Schizophrenia is more common in males than in females.

The incidence of mood disorders can be connected to family members. You are more likes to have bipolar mood disorder (types I and II), generalized anxiety disorder, and clinical depression if you have family members who had severe forms of any of those mental illnesses.

Personality disorders are more like a learned set of maladaptive behaviors that were engaged in during childhood become a lifelong pattern.

What kind of mental illnesses are you referring to?

Schizophrenia is rare in women, but children of 2 schizophrenic parents have a 50/50 chance of developing the illness. With one parent, the risk drops to 25%. Educate yourself on the risks. If you simply grew up in a household where there was a person there with the illness, there is little chance that you could develop schizophrenia and if you did it would be unrelated.

Although environment and heredity play a part in the development of mental illness, there are a variety of other factors that can influence the situation as well. Each individual learns different coping skills and has different levels of tolerance for different stressors, so mental illness is also partly a mysterious thing to mental health professionals because there really is no telling who will develop mental illness. Some soldiers went to war and fought and returned home with barely any problems with PTSD. Some soldiers who never even saw the front developed PTSD. You can never tell.

Bipolar mood disorder, seasonal affective disorder and clinical depression, although they can reach severe levels, are luckily usually very treatable mental illnesses, under the right supervision and with the right therapeutic approach.

If you are concerned to the point of being overwhelmed or upset, try seeking out therapy. It can help you develop the healthy coping skills necessary to deal with stress in your life, and to work through issues you may have developed while growing up. Good luck!
