I find sometimes it helps to just throw things out or clean up an area maybe 15 minutes at a time or even less if that works better for you. It is like if you're expecting company and haven't been given much notice it is amazing how you can straighten up things in just a few minutes.

What were some of the first things you cleaned/tossed to let go? Just a question

The first things I seem to toss is old paperwork no longer needed, mail which has come in with advertising etc. I don't need. I went through my files and got folders ready for everything for next year. I also went through magazines I had here and some I can just take to the laundry room. I'm going to start cutting out the articles I want to keep instead of keeping the whole magazine. I'm still working on trying to get rid of some clothing, but what I got rid of so far I took to a Thrift Store. I still have things I haven't worn for a year. That is one way to decide what to get rid of. I also go through things in my cupboard where I keep cereals, rice, macaroni etc. I try to put things together if I have a small amount of something to eliminate some of the boxes or packages. Or use up the small amount if I can. I still need to go through my cassette tapes and video tapes. I might give some to my son or take them to a Thrift Store or Goodwill Store. Whatever I can recycle that way I do instead of just tossing things out which are still good. I go through things in the bathroom and give extra shampoos I'm not using to my son or another family member. Sometimes things like that accumulate or hand lotions etc. I did give away a set of dishes I had, but since I like dishes and glasses it is difficult for me to part with them. If I take a dish to a family event sometimes I'll just leave the dish there usually at my son's and I always see that they are using it so that is one way I can give something up. I also have trouble giving up books, but I'm starting on that now. I've had books packed away for years not doing anyone any good so little by little will start giving them away. Also, I don't have a lot of storage space and it is a good feeling to get rid of things and see more space. I try to keep up with my laundry so that isn't taking up space in the storage closet.

A start is good anywhere and I did not do all my cleaning out at one time. Sometimes I just do things in the room I'm in. It just seems necessary to me to keep looking for where I can make a little more space because I don't have a spacious apt. So, keeping the clutter out is really a necessity. The apt. is much easier to maintain that way, too.

start with your sink. 🙂

Try going to Flylady's website and go to the babysteps section. 😉

Good luck.

Codi, I'll second that. It is a great feeling to look at that shining sink. That being said, I have dishes to put away.

Actually I have a thing about clean sinks and mine are usually pretty good.
Its the clutter that comes in that piles up..
I think I need to do my office closet so all the keep stuff that doesn't fit in there for all the junk can go back in there.. would free up space everywhere else in that room.

It helps some but I am so depressed not sure its the fix... I have actually booked a doctor appoint - I am scaring myself with how crappy I feel...

Bblue, I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so down. I'm glad though that getting rid of the clutter is helping you while you're waiting to see the Dr. It sounds like a good idea to go ahead with what you want to do in the office. To me there is just something uplifting about seeing the extra space and putting space to better use. I hope it will help you feel better soon.

Today there was an email message from Flylady about someone who gets rid of one category of clutter at a time. So, bblue you tackled the shoes...that's a category.

bblue, and others, here is an article that may be of some help.
Its right to the point.
I can't reprint it here, but here is the first paragraph (to give you the idea) and then the website to go to it:

Everything that surrounds us is a reflection of what we believe and how we are feeling. The state of our home is no exception. So take a look at the things that surround you, and consider what this says about the beliefs you are holding deep inside."

http://wisewaysofwomen.com/ind.....connection

just found it today, and took notes. 🙂

If that is true my life is cluttered
but on the edges - the main part is fairly clean most of the time...
I will definately ponder this further

Hi All,

so tell me how to start de-cluttering my emotional part. I got the physical part down and my house is in order and clean, but my head and heart are not. I have been removing unhealthy people from my life and that has been painful and lonely, but some of my feelings are messed up.

I deserve to live in a cozy, orderly haven from the world. I'm the only one who has the power to make it that way. Right now, I will start a crisis cleaning session.

Just for today I will focus on talking about good stuff. I will not complain, or criticise anyone.

Emotional clutter is also about letting go. Zebra, you are doing well to let go of unhealthy people. One thing that helps me is to remember to read a daily reading every morning usually in The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie. I find her books helpful, always when I'm struggling with something. It helps to start with a positive thought for the day. We learn to let go of all the things we can not change because if we can do nothing about them why keep them around in our minds. When we do that we can stay more focused on the present moments. The past moments are gone and the future ones are not here yet, but the present ones are ours now to choose to do whatever is best for us. Asking ourselves what can I do today to feel better etc. Positive thoughts of some action we can do right now. We can also write down the changes we want to see happen in our lives. When I look up emotional clutter on the web, I find there are many ways in which people tackle this so there are a lot of ideas out there.

Sometimes my breakfast or part of it is a stewed apple with cinnamon and cloves and a little sweetener and a little lemon if desired.

sometimes I think I am the unhealthy person in my life. maybe if I treat myself better and allow myself to build a life I want, then I will be healthier.

Tumble,

Thanks for the advice. I do like Melody Bettie books and I will look into getting that one also. I beleive I am on the right track in recovery and the last two days have been wonderful for me. I have focused on my and then my children and my home and pets. I have not responded to any thing negative. I am grateful for the people that are good in my life and the things I have.

Bonni: a good healthy snack is a peanut butter and bannan sandwhich, I know it sounds so gross, but it really is good with a big glass of milk and Tumbles apples sounds delicious too.

Talk about clutter...you should see the office I am working in and it isn't MY clutter so I can't do anything with it. Papers are everywhere!!!!! I told my boss the other day that if it was buried in all this rubble he wouldn't be able to find it and if he hadn't needed it yet he probably wouldn't and we should just strike a match to it.

Emotional clutter - repressed feelings... confused thoughts..
this is a huge challenge

I find the release in freeing from physical clutter gives me energy to think a little bit on the emotional...
by clearer thinking I am slowly (I stress slowly) finding my real feelings...

I think I have just been cluttering up to hide from having to deal with what I know to be true...

That and the time excuse - I am work overloaded - so I avoid the other parts..
