What do you all think the first steps are in clearing out? Do you do it methodically? Or little by little? I have a friend that says she gives away "five things a day." I don't know what to do, because I already weeded a while back and need to do more soon. It's so hard. Especially with books.

I have many books - that is my problem. What do you keep and what do you give away?

First, don't drag out more than you can put back. Perhaps open one drawer, purge that, stop! Flylady suggests just 15 minutes. Set a time and when the timer goes off Stop! One thing I do when I work from home is I work for 30 mins. Do something for 15 and go back to work. Simply taking a grocery store bag and walking through your house to throw 27 things away can be a start. I have even counted bread ties to get to 27!

Ella, I think it depends here on what it is and who gave it to you and if its replacable or not...many thing I have are my childs, things I want to keep...for her to have one day when she grows up...but alot is things I don't need too, I guess just getting one foot in front of the other and making a committment to do it, is a good first step here.

Who is flylady Bitsy???

Bitsy and I are fellow fans of the FlyLady. She has a website: http://www.flylady.net. She can send you emails throughout the day that encourage you to Finally Love Yourself (or FLY). She has lots of good info for getting rid of clutter and streamlining daily routines so you have time to live your life.

Bonni, I posted my emotional clutter on feedback please.
Survivorofabuse: Good luck to you. You won't believe how much "stuff" you have that you really can let go.

I know, I think I can, I have done this before, downsized my life, but there were times I had wished I had kept certain things, so I want to go slow, and be really sure this time! My hubby, oh he is a million times worse than myself, but yes I do agree, we can live without alot less than we think we can, we sure can.

In the process of decluttering the living room...I have rearranged the furniture so that it is more open and feels airy...

Next will be my sun room where I have put alot of my clutter in the past and have not gone through since a year ago May!

I am getting a system in place..If I have to think twice or so about keeping it....I don't need it. That 27 items sounds good...as well as the 15 minutes....going to try that as well. I had already started piles for donations, piles for selling on line or yard sales, and a pile for just tossing out.

I really like this thread!

You go Red Blonde! You'll be amazed by how quickly those 15 minute sessions make a difference.

It feels good...Today I went through one of my kitchen cabinets and actually tossed two bags of 27 things out! And I think I am also decluttering my mind a bit as I am doing that. Now on to my sun room...going to start with the 27 items first in there...that is the most cluttered room at the present time.

That is a good idea to work on the most cluttered space, easy to throw out a lot there. Mine is my storage closet which I've never gotten organized well. This thread is really a motivator. Ty, again. 🙂

Good going all. I am living in an older house with no dishwasher so I have a hard time keeping the dishes clean and the sink empty, but last night ( the sink is white porcelain and was very stained. I could not get it clean) I put some Oxy-clean in the sink then poured in boiling water. I let it cool then put paper towels in it and spread the wet paper towels on my stained formica counter tops. This morning I scrubbed the sink with a scrubby picked up the paper towels and wiped everything down. (I left the towels on the countertopps overnight.) It gott it a lot cleaner.

Hello Fellow DeClutterers!

Tomorrow they will come and take away the 40+ boxes I just finished packing, along with a few pieces of furniture.

I am looking forward to the emptyness for a while before the demolition crew comes in and things get caotic, which is soon. Tonight I paniced because I packed all my silverware, and lost the plastic stuff I hadn't thrown out (it's finally coming in handy). I'm just recycling all my plastics until this is done. It's like camping. Only indoors. 🙂

Bitsy- I don't have a dishwasher either. It's only me here so it seemed pointless... and to take up that much space in my apartment wouldn't be worth it. Though, I know people here that have them. It's a nice convenience, but one less machine in my life! Doesn't that make you feel good?

Hey, De Clutterers, joining in cause...

I have a TV that doesnt work well..

A broken cassette player (double deck, mind you, I was gonna copy 16 (English lessons)cassettes which I never will...

6 dessert dishes I dislike - so much that I bought some today thinking I didnte have any...

Only got 2 lunch plates. Tehy´ll go, I got paid and got myself 4 dishes and 4 bowls, yey...

Flower pots I wont ever need...

This one is good: a ~4-inch binder with computer material I was gonna read someday. Well 6 months passed many times and the stuff is many times outdated.

I wonder what I´ll find when I go in the spare/deposit room...

HINT: I have a box the size of a dozen packs of letter size paper where I "dump" things I dont wanna throw out. Periodically I go thru it and check the stuff and how long its been there. Six months is a good marker to throw out things for some people but for me, well, I throw it out whenever I feel like it. And I love to assemble garbage both for use some day and garbage I put in a bag to throw out.

Happy declutering!!

You know, about the dishwasher, we have one, but we almost NEVER use it. I wash the dishes as I cook and there are only four of us. I just wash as I go. I don't like my water glass to have that dishwasher taste. My friend, who lives alone, uses his dishwasher. I think he runs it once per week.

Bonni ~

Alot of my clutter is paperwork. I see something on line and print it out to read again...or to give to someone. I usually download the file to my documents...I guess I will have to make a pile of papers and then check to see if it has been downloaded....then toss paper copy out..

I have stuff still in boxes that I haven't even looked in since I moved..and that was 8 years ago! I am BBBBAAADD! I am such a packrat!
