The longer I live, the more I realize what an absolute positive effect a positive role model/mentor might have been.

Maybe it is never too late.

The thing about growing up in a dysfunctional family is that that is all that you know.

You just kind of figure that that is the way the world the world operates and functions and that is all that there is to it.

I suppose.

Until you challenge it.

Quite shocking to realize that there are other realities.

To expand beyond the dysfunction.

Guess this is what I am starting to figure out.......maybe?

Other worlds out there. Other....functional, stable, non-confusing worlds.....

Really???????

TBT,
In this age of everyone having to know everything, its difficult for role models to remain on their pedestals. We all have flaws. I think in some ways its good for us to realize that none of us are perfect, but we shouldn't give up on striving to be better.

So, who do you admire? Today, I am admiring Kara Goucher. She came in third in the Boston Marathon. She wanted first place and she's understandably disappointed - its not like she hasn't worked for it. She doesn't feel cheated, like a certain beauty queen from CA, but is committed to learning from the experience and doing better next time. Aside about Miss CA, my problem isn't her view, but her lack of tact. You expect even your minor royalty to display some diplomacy.

Other role models? I'm beginning to admire Michelle Obama. She seems to have dealt well with the conflicts inherent with being a professional, a parent and a public figure. I'm watching to see what lessons I can learn.

So, other ones?

I'm really surprised not to see more responses on this. I think it would help to be able to point to examples of healthy behavior to model. I think there is a general lack of people in the public eye that any of us would choose to emulate.

Is this the case? beyond the two I named, anyone else that anyone here would want to emulate?

I really don't have someone in the public eye that I admire too much, but I do in my life.

My Mother and Father are role models for me, and still are..My father inspires me so much, he is a kind man and my mother and father were only 16 and 17 when my brother was born. He started working in the auto industry when he was 15 and climbed the ladder of sucess... with no education to speak of, he was brought up in a poor family, and he was just an honest young man, and worked so hard to get where he is today, happy, loving, and his compassion for others is like no one else's I've ever seen.

If he see's a homeless person begging for money he talks to them and will give them money, or take them to get something to eat... He is someone that I admire most in my life.
