Was just thinking....

Most of us have survived much abuse, which is positive. I think it shows inner strength, intelligence and a willingness to want to be or get better.

On the other hand, at what point does one go from survival to 'living' ?

Thought it might be interesting to toss around some ideas and experiences. 🙂

I know this dosen't answer the question but I can't even get out of it, i'm still in it. and yet I can't admit that either?? Make sense??

Somehow the title of survivor has 2 faces for me...one conjures up images of getting out of the water half drowned but making it to the other side, and still alive. The other face is when you've regained your strength and become strong, courageus, beautiful person, and caring, and can see the good things in your life.

The first image scares me and the second seems like a fantasy, and lately my fantasies seem to be crumbling...

To me, "surviving" means plodding through each day without joy, peace, happiness, safety or freedom.

"Living" means doing the things which bring me joy, peace, happiness and feeling completely safe and free in pursuing them.

Heck...I just read what I wrote and I sound like I am paraphrasing Our Constitution (...Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness??...)

: )

Ma Strong: sounds good to me, constitutionally and all. 🙂

I believe surviving is just going thru the day and completeing your daily tasks and not really smiling or feeling any pride or contentment.

I believe living is bein at a place of contentment that you can go thru your day and get your daily tasks completed and sing, smile, laugh while doing them. Living is taking the time to listen to a bird sing, smell a flower, dance in the rain, or just feel the breeze gently blow across your face.

If you survive something that must mean at least you made it to the other side you didn't die. Often survivors will tell of how much stronger they became and how much clearer and richer life could be and how some of the things that mattered didn't anymore. We all have to emotionally survive things that happen and this site is overflowing with survivors and they are giving me so much help to get over to the other side. Thanks everyone

Surviving is getting through the needs of what you must do to survive... I have to work, because I need to pay the bills, I have to eat, so I don/t get sick. I have to sleep, so I can function... I have to take care of my pet or it will die...

Living is a feeling of loving yourself... Giving yourself the freedom to be the best that you are, and living it....Living in the moment and experiencing life to it's fullest...

Someone told me once that I had "just been surviving" for many years. I took that to mean, "'just getting by, by the skin of my teeth', or 'tottering the fence between life or death'....I just remember feeling so powerless when I was just surviving. Doing much better now, but there are still some things I just accept. Good grief, this could open up so many different thoughts and ways of dealing with things.

I think looking at a survivor is someone who has made it through a storm in their lives...so in that sense they are conquerors to me...Travlin, as you said about 'conquering' then living. Surviving seems half living to me almost like mamacinnamon said.

I think this term has many different meanings, and is a bit confusing. ugh.

It is a shame and waste of time to be living in survival stage for a long period. It should be spend to the fullest but many of us here are surviving because our lives depended on someone to make us happy. The only person that can make us happy is ourself. Fear prevents people from moving forward. Overcoming fear can allow someone to move from survival to living life to the fullest. I believer there is a recent thread that would be helpful to read if you did not have fear. Who Moved My Cheese Anyway is a great little short read book and is truly inspirational. There is also a book called the Present by the same author, also yet another great little book to read about living in the present because that is all that really counts. Living in the past keeps people from really living and just surviving. Living in the present is living.

Yes indeed I have a lot of baggage in my lifetime. It is mind boggling. It is no wonder my quality of life is a bit boring and stale. Out of fear, I cannot move. But at least Im a little more peaceful and not depressed.
