For example, why would a person want to isolate themself? I guess that would be isolation due to circumstances. What would happen to them psychologically if they were isolated for a while?

Forced isolation: Ex: Solitary confinement, Quarantine,

Voluntary isolation: Ex: Penanace

Isolation due to circumstances:Ex: Shipwrecked and find oneself on a deserted island.

It is difficult to state succintly "what happens if... ?"

There are many case studies involving these topics. One will have to spend time and effort according to his need to learn from them.

social skills become weak for one.

learn how to become your own best friend.

appreciate social contact, realise the importance of it for self growth.

found outstanding questions within oneself that cannot be answered without a discussion.

there are some studies on individuals who have been isolated, and these studies are teachings from my perspective, they have found answers from within. there lives have changed radically.

isolation one mans heaven anothers hell!

Rachel....sometimes people isolate themselves because they need to bring in their spacial field so that it's closer to them. This is typical when you have a person that is emotionally much younger in age than the chronological age is. They "feel" more comfortable, more secure with the boundaries in real tight - just like a young child is. Someone who is emotionally 7 years old would feel terrified out in the real world. They may fight it for alot of years but at some point - they may just give in and go find comfort and security for themselves in parameters that they feel safe in. People get stuck at certain ages emotionally when something traumatic impacts them and the freeze up emotionally. It's sort of like going into an emotional shock that last for a long time and stunts growth.

But, like any child - they don't need to be left alone to figure whatever out by themselves. We all know how children might put things together. So, whoever it is you are talking about - I'd keep a close eye on them and monitor them. It may be a cry for help, too, but I would approach them with caution.....sounds like a very frightened person may be on the other side of that door.
