Is it real or not? I have heard alot of stories from people in my community about loving women and men who have turned into cyberaddicted people and have run off to meet and live with people who they have just met on the internet. Is there really such a thing as Internet Addiction and cybering in a sexual way that real life people loose out on their former love ones? Maybe technology is getting to interactive. Does the Canadain Psychological Association address this new disorder? People and friends in my community are getting hurt and it is very suttle these instances with people destroy their marriages and friendships over computer cyber-real life people. It is a real concern.

I read your post a while ago, but I wanted time to think about my answer. I do think there can be an addiction to internet. When I first got online it became so fasinating to me...a whole world beyond my finger tips. I found myself spending more and more time online, than the real world. My husband who doesn't say much, suddenly went off and thats when I knew I was spending too much time online. I also realized that nothing, not even internet can compare to a real conversation.
I have also never been in a situation where I was searching for love through internet, but it seems to be common. I think if your happy in your home life, then one wouldn't search the internet for "love".
Then there are those stories you hear about that are wonderful...long time internet pals meeting for the first time or a real love connection made, but there are also bad stories too.
So I really can't answer your question. I do think the internet is great. I email family whom I don't have the opportunity of seeing. I've even bonded closer to a cousin whom I've only seen 3 times because of our distance. Then there are those people who are looking for something, but are looking in the wrong place. I think it just depends on the situation and person.

Thank you daisey to your thoughtful reply. I am glad that you consider real life conversation over cyber based conversation and you listened to how your love one was feeling about your use on the computer, he was probably missing your company. I think there are many people that have choosen their real friends over their cyber friends and loves but more and more I am hearing stories of neglected partners and children. Thank You for sharing daisey. I hope many will see by your example that cyber isn't everything. 🙂 Is there anyone else that has a different opinion?

What most people online who think they are addicted are probably suffering from is the desire to not want to deal with other problems in their lives. Those problems may be a mental disorder (depression, anxiety, etc.), a serious health problem or disability, or a relationship problem. It is no different than turning on the TV so you won't have to talk to your spouse, or going "out with the boys" for a few drinks so you don't have to spend time at home. Nothing is different except the modality.
