Ok, so I got this ideal from On My Way's thread of why we need to have our own identity.

I want you to think of what defines you. That doesn't mean your job or you children, but really defines you. What makes you you. What are your strongest beliefs or opinions. What do stand up for and don't back down. What is something that you can defend your stance on and feel passion for. What's your personal style...how you are, not how you are because someone wants you to be.

Have fun with this.....

I am a laid back hippy chick!!!

My style is not trendy. It is not flashy. I am subtle. Yet, I am graceful (in my own way) and I can be classy and refined at the same time. I can pull off boycut jeans and a t-shirt with flip flops, just as well as I can a tailored suit and heels.

I am strongly pro-choice.

I am opposed to the war in Iraq.

I like tobasco on my pizza.

I don't eat red meat.

I don't wear fur.

I tend to fall back on nature whenever I can.

I enjoy romantic comedies.

I am a liberal and all that goes with it.

I do not judge.

I believe in God.

I have issue with organized religion.

I will strongly protest animal cruelty, prejudgism, and deadbeat dads.

I love the USA but take issue with our government.

This is just a bit of what makes me who I am. Geeez, does it kind of sounds like a singles ad. LOL.

good thread tracylyn...funny after reading your response on the other thread, I thought about this idea too, so glad you did it!!

Last night we were talking at meeting I go to, about what defines us. SAdly enough, including myself, many people listed "Mother, father, job" etc...and as you stated above this is not what defines us.

But for me:
Need to think on this. I started to write I believe in...., but this is not it either, is it.

It's actually pretty hard to really know what defines you....

I seriously had to start simple. Like what's my favorite color, favorite food. What do I like on my pizza and what kind of music do I like best.

It has a lot to do with what you feel strongly about. So often in life people defend a belief but have nothing to back up what they believe. They believe strongly about something because it's what they were told to believe in by their parents, their church, their teachers but they don't have something that they truly and honestly have an opinion about that is their own.

I have a hard time with someone that will say they believe in something but when challenged they can't tell you why. They don't have passion about it...it's just what has been ingrained into them that this is what "we" as a family, as a church, as a certain group, believes and therefore you should too.

Does that make sense....

Hi T--

I'm no Ghandi, but I think beliefs are learned, kind of like programming.

But what defines us--are we born with it? I don't know. This is a very subjective topic. A good thought provoker!

Thanks again.

Hummmm - good thought.

I don't know if we are born with it....my thought on that is that if we were then my opinions would be pretty similar to that of my siblings yet...we have VERY different opinions and very different things that define us.

I find that what defines me are those things not only in my characteristic traits but also those things I feel passionately about.

My father and I have debated my whole adult life if who we are is defined by what we do or what we do defines who we are...the two are completely different things.

That said, I want to do mine now

-a sense of style and asthetic vision that comes completely naturaly to me

-quick witted

-enjoy terrible childrens jokes (like the pirate movie...it was rated AAARRRG)

-always make a perfect cup of tea without even trying

-being a mother...I know what you said, but sometimes it's as easy as being one or not, and I choose every day to be a real loving mother.

Wow, that is fun, I want to date myself!

EF..a good thought. It is more difficult to leave the labels for ourselves out rather than what you shared about:

IDENTITY....WHO ARE YOU?

Somewhat a more difficult challenge. It is a schock to some to find out that they do not know who they are...like me I know who I am,but on my way to knowing and learning more, but putting it into words is very difficult for me.

I was personally suprised at how little I could come up with--everyone tells me that I am the most unique person they know (don't know if that's good or not!), but these all seem like desperate clutches looking over it again. I guess that's sort of the point though? Putting it into words lets you know yourself even further?

I think so. Most including me say what I like to do, adn get cought up in the "DO" part, which is sort of performance oriented for me...a place I do not enjoy being, as for a long while it has defined WHO I see myself to be...and it is laborious.

But to actually say who we are takes thought..kind of just "being" rather than "doing"...and confusing to a degree I think as well!!

Any more thoughts to figure out this puzzle?

I DO agree that motherhood defines who we are too. It's just that for soooo long that's ALL I was defined by and I really lost who I was other than that....I guess that's why I said to steer clear of the labels such as mother and wife.

OMW - keep it simple - you don't have to have a lot and you don't have to think too hard. Just think of the little things....

I think character and personal style are part of what defines us.

Talk about your character. Tell us your style.

Is there something you feel strongly about that no one could sway your opinion of?

This is my first post on this site. Hello everyone! 😉

What defines me? I am making a conscious effort to remind myself of that every day so that I don't let it slip away and lose sight of it as I have done more than once in my life. Lets see:

-I am insanely compassionate about animals.
-I'm a writer
-I prefer to discuss the hell out of an issue until I know it has been resolved. (I'm a talker)
-I am an open book, but with a few of the pages conveniently torn out.
-I light up when I talk about music. All different genres! I am a wealth of information about musical artists of many eras.
-Know a lot about movies & some sitcoms.

I'll stop there for now.
