I just broke up with my boyfiend that I had been with for 3 years. I feel very shaken right now because I didn't look at codependance as a possibility. When I first Met him I was heavily drinking and using. I had had a baby when I was 18 years old and I gave her up for adoption. I had also been in a codependant realationship with her father. When I first met my boyfriend I was still going through the pain and loss over this first relationship. He came into my life and convinced me to get into alchoholics annonymous which I went to for a long time. I didn't realize that I had turned my boyfriend into my higher power. I also didn't realize that I had a severly codependant relationship with him. It was a fairly quick break up but now I am forced to deal with 3 years worth of not taking care of my own needs. I feel as If I am starting into a bad depression and I don't know what to do.

get into therapy and learn as much as you can about codependency. "Codependent No More" is a good read to start with. That and come here for support. But get into therapy.

Hi Shine...It's a good thing that you recognize the fact that depression is setting in. Try to focus on some good things that are going on in your life. It's time for you to do for you...take care of you...whatever you do, keep in contact with people, don't withdraw and be lone for long periods of time. You may even want to start an exercise program...I know it's not easy to get out of being depressed but it is possible. I've been there a couple of times and there are times when it would be easy to go there again. I have gotten to where I can recognize it when it starts and am able to pull myself out of it. Always remember there is someone who loves you very much and you are the apple of his eye. Hang in there...
