I was taught that pulling your own hair out is a type of self abuse, therefore you should ask yourself what you are trying to punish yourself for. My hair has gradually fallen out over the years, and is quite thin in places, so do you think you could save what you pull out and send it to me? (only joking). The way to stop, is to give yourself something else to do to occupy your hands! Good-luck!

I dont agree with Dilly as if you stop pulling your hair by occupying your hands with something different I am sure you will find another coping mechanism.Thats what it probably is ,a coping mechanism, for something else going on in your life.Have a think about your life and see if you can come up with something you are unhappy with now or something you never really got over from the past.

It's usually a "shame" thing along with a way to distract yourself away from something that hurts. But, it is about - punishing you and doing that by attacking your looks. A woman's hair has everything to do with her femininity. I would say that you've suffered substantial hurt / betrayal from someone in this area and you've stuffed it inside yourself. When the pain comes up - you do this.

Jalibeth

As I said in my opening statement, pulling your own hair out is a form of self-punishment. Listen to what Ladeska says, and try and pin-point what you are attacking yourself for. I hate to trot out the usual cliche, but it is normally a sexual problem that you are trying to distract yourself from by "attacking" your femininity. So, Who has revolted you by their actions? Only YOU can answer your own questions.

Tricholotillomania is a compulsive disorder wherein the patient compulsively pulls out hair.

Theoretically this originates as a comfort mechanism form childhood, often done while nursing (babies sometimes will gently tug or pull at their own hair while hursing or sucking from a bottle/pacifier).

There are simply behavioral techniques to control ths compulsion, but I recommend that they be done under therapeutic supervision. There are also some pharmaceuticals like Paxil which can decrease compulsive behaviors (FYI most anti depressants have more functions than just makingyou happier/numb).

One common one is to snap a rubber band you wear on your wrist every time you get the urge to pull your hair. Another is to do PMR or biofeedback to reduce generalized anxiet levels.

Well said cici. The "snap a rubber band on your wrist" was exactly what I meant when I advised her to "find something else to do with her hands" Jalibeth, has any of this helped?
