My husband just called me. He's had a toothache for over a week. He refuses to go to the dentist. Now he's in so much pain at 4:30 on friday afternoon, that he called me to see if I could get him an appointment with my dentist, who has never seen him. Needless to say, I could not. I suggested he go to the ER where he could at least get something for pain and some antibiotics. He says, "It's starting to feel better."
But wait. This is the best part. He's taking Aleve. He tells me that the bottle says he shouldn't take more than 3 pills in 24 hours, so he's not sure if it's okay to take another pill now, having had his last one late last night.
Can I smack him? Get this. My son's girlfriend offered him some antibiotics she has at her house. He accepts. The man was a total junkie for 20 years!: cocaine, heroin, pot. He continually put horrifying crap into his body, daily (and he smokes) for 20 years. Having only been clean for the last 1.5 years. AND HE IS WORRIED ABOUT TAKING AN EXTRA ALEVE!!!!!
Thanks, I feel better now.

jas,
Glad you feel better, but what made you so mad? Sorry but I am not getting it too well...(but wouldn't be the first time!) Could it be that he is trying really hard to not OD on anything, or is it something else? Sounds like he changed his mind in the course of a few minutes about what to take and thought your idea was a good one about the anti-biotics after all?

OMW, I'm being very unkind, and basically calling my husband an idiot. I just think it's funny that someone who has taken numerous illegal and dangerous drugs and who will take anti-biotics prescribed for someone else, is afraid of taking an extra over-the-counter Aleve tablet. It's baffling!
I'm not mad. I probably should have said I just have to SHARE rather than VENT.

Jastypes,
I had to laugh when I read your post.
Every single addict I have ever been with...or ever known for that matter....has said the same type of things.
"I can't Motrin, it's bad for your stomach".
"I don't drink soda, it's bad for you".
etc.etc.
A couple of grams of cocaine and a 30 pack...no problem, but heaven forbid they take an aspirin!

Hi Jas!
Oh, I totally get ya. Too dang funny. Doesn't he realize that the tooth won't get better? Boy, he's afraid of the dentist? A new patient at 4:30 on ANY day much less a Friday is a hard thing to do.I give you credit for trying!
With what you say about his past, sounds like he's "swallowing the camel and straining at the gnat", if ya know what I mean. Too many pain pills, tee hee!
You better watch out that he doesn't overdue it with the ol' Aleve.

I so love that. I will leave work smiling today thank you! I love it when addicts do that. I dont know how many times have I been lectured on smoking from meth addicts. I just kind of laugh at them. And agree with them. Yes you are so right. I know uhhuh I should not put those toxins in my body, god only knows what my lungs look like. Its all true and I know it. I do imagine though that battery acid or drano is so much more appealing to my insides ya know
