I am a recent author, under serious pressure to lose weight. I am not allowed to do T.V interviews because they say I am too fat. The more pressure that's put on me the more I eat. I think it's from a long line of codepency behavior and rebeliousness. I need help.

Wow! Can I ask how much weight you want to lose? Or, do you really want to lose the weight? Is it just because of the pressure?

WHO says you are too fat to do interviews??????????

last I checked, the media does not discriminate...consider oprah...how big and small she's been all these years...and many many many other celebrities.

I would cry "foul" if someone told me I couldn't interview cuz I was overweight....sorry, it's not your weight they are interviewing you about....it's your writing...and that's all that should matter.

Thank you so much for writing back. I am so sad about it. I am overweight by about 50 lbs.
I can't stop over eating, before it was because I was uneducated and I ate bad stuff now I am conciously rebeling. I have everything I need to lose weight except the "want" to do it.
You know what they said to me.
"You need to drop 30lbs before we put you on T.V, the last thing we need is another fat mexican mother on the television".
I just looked up and said "Okay"
and walked out.
I wish I would have asserted myself.

"the last thing we need is another fat mexican mother on the television"

%%$#@#R* !!!

My blood boils at that comment that was made to you. I personally feel that the last thing we need on television is another unnaturally thin, plastic-surgeried, fake blonde female for any reason whatsoever! (Not that they are asking you to get plastic surgery and dye your hair... but just thought I'd take the opportunity to say what I'm tired of seeing.

I so totally hear you about the rebellion kicking in. You know if you were a *male* author it's unlikely they would require weight loss before agreeing to put you on air.

Student1, I hope you can achieve clarity about what you really want for you. Weight loss is possible (I've done it dozens of times! ha, like Mark Twain and quitting smoking) but you point to some of the internal issues which sometimes rise up and demand to be confronted when it becomes a power struggle.

BTW, if you have any evidence of what they said to you i.e. "fat mexican mother".... I would think the ACLU could help you launch a suit over it. If you want to go that route.

regards, kroika

Dang! That's harsh...still, losing weight is like anything else. Quitting drugs, drinking, smoking, etc. No one can MAKE you. Only you can make that call and decide what you want and what's best for you.

My boss has been ballooning over the past 3 years and constantly complaining to me about it. Now, her health is really deteriorating and she tells me "I'm really trying, H-gal". Well, she doesn't have to answer to me. I guess when the pain in her hips gets bad enough, she'll make the change. Til then, she will continue to eat her feelings, I guess. This woman is about 100 pounds overweight and it's now crippling her.

Sounds like you have a handle on what's going on with you. Incentive helps sometimes. Maybe start slow and try not to use or think the word "diet"?

Kroika- Girl you made me laugh out loud! Thanks for that!

Honolulugal-Your right! I am going to lose weight for me not for them.

On my way- I can't sue him, he is my financer, he pays for my company to keep going. This is the way that he is, he is very blunt. This isn't the only thing I have heard. It's hard to be a person who is looked at as a "Mexican" all the time by everyone I work with, I've never delt with people like this. It's all about money, I guess that's why they are all millionaires.

Oh, dear.

Well, there are the blunts out there in the world. Still, if he's holding the checkbook, yikes, you're in for a ride, all right.

You know, here in Hawaii, there are about a billion races. All the bigotry in the world from race to race. But where else can a biracial couple feel completely at home? Right here.

As to the "Mexican" commment, every time I hear someone say "bok bok" (pronouced "book book") which is slang for Filipino, it pisses me off. You won't find a harder working culture or a more loving people, as a whole, but here, they are treated like cockroaches.

I feel that people who use racial slurs are insecure. What can you do except turn away from such losers?

Go get 'em, Student!

H-gal

I wish that were true. I was always comfertable with myself. I thought I carried my weight well. And here I am looking in the mirror everyday, just discusted with myself and my inability to motivate myself to lose weight. I just want to hide under the covers and wait till my life is over.

Hi S1,

Have you read any of Geneen Roth's books? I like her writing a lot. The first one of hers I read was "Feeding the Hungry Heart", and somewhere along the line I also read her "Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating".

I've also read criticisms of her approach; there is a website called Normal Eating and they have another way of looking at addressing the emotional components of weight, eating, body image etc. etc.

And of course, there is always Susie Orbach's classic "Fat is a Feminist Issue" and Naomi Wolf's "The Beauty Myth". No shortage of women who have given a lot of thought to the way these issues affect women's lives.

I am sad to read your sentences "I am looking in the mirror everyday, just disgusted with myself and my inability to motivate myself to lose weight. I just want to hide under the covers and wait till my life is over."

(((Student1))) no woman deserves to feel that way. You have written books! You have something to say! And you very much deserve to love yourself and not let these hateful judgements hold you back.

I wish you great success with your continuing journey. take care, kroika

I'm so sorry that you were treated this way! I've worked in the entertainment industry myself and know the bluntness all too well. It stings. I was also one of those too thin blondies...lol kroika! But not plasticated...all natural here!

I struggled with an overeating disorder for years, I know the feeling. One book that really helps me keep on track and discover why I overeat, and why I have the "know" but lack the "want" is Tales from the Scale. Its funny, sad, and everything in between.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you!
