why oh why do I always buy into whatever someone is trying to sell me?

This beautiful, young, vivacious 18 or so girl came to my house today. She was part of one of those magazine selling troops that travels from area to area selling magazines and trying to earn points to win a trip, to Rome in her case.

Well, I agree to buy some magazines, three is a sponsorship...and then you get one free. They don't have prices by them. So, when she tallies it up, and s&h and all, it comes to...are you ready for this? $142!!!!!!

Well, the magazines are for like 3 years, and I got one for my step dad, one for my kids, and two for my husband. I didn't even get one for myself because I already have magazine subscriptions to what I want!

so now I sat down to pay bills and wouldn't you know that I don't have enough left to make my house payment that was due the 1st and I was going to pay it today!

So I guess I will have to cancel that transaction but I feel bad about even considering it. But on the back of the copies she left me it says you can cancel within three days from midnight of the night of the transaction but the seller won't get any points.

I always like to buy from anyone selling anything like that...when they are working toward something. And I wish I was young and could do something like that to earn a trip to Rome!

So what do you all think?

I have done the same thing to where afterwards I had second thoughts cause I couldn't afford it. Remember no one will take care of you & your finances except for yourself. If you can't afford it then cancel. The fact is it's either your house payment or a trip for a kid. Which one is most important to you? You can always help someone else at later down the road.

Another suggestion is there anyway you can purchase a subscription to one that doesn't cost much?

Cancel the transaction. Miss Vivacious can find some other way to get to Europe. To take care of others, you have to care for yourself. Perhaps next time someone comes to the door, you could ask them what they are working towards, and then ask them to choose whether their cause is more important or if your mortgage payment is more important. In this case, Rome loses. In the case of someone who might be working to raise money for a homeless shelter or put groceries on their own table, well, that might be a little different, no?

Back out, lady! It's totally ok to do that.

I would be so upset if someone agreed to sponsor me and then backed out.

I was won over by her charm I guess that is what made her a good salesperson.

I guess I need to work on saying no nicely. I hadn't planned on it, but now it is apparent I need to!

I am going to work on being healthier financially this year.

I guess I know my answer. I have to take care of me and my family, not a stranger I will not likely meet again.

What if she comes back to confront me?
What would I do then?

Mama,

I suggest canceling ASAP! The reason I say this is because I did the same thing....and I got screwed. I paid $125 for subscriptions that never came. When I called the BBB, I was told that I was their 144th call!

Better to be safe than sorry!

Good luck,
lolli

CANCEL!

Look at it like taking back a pair of shoes that didn't fit. It's really not a big deal - people take back things a million times a day. If that company is charging an $142 for 4 magazines, she'll be on a plane to Rome probably by the end of the week!

Well, I looked on the BBB website, and they are a legit company, the typical complaints were that the magazines were slow in coming, and she even told me that it could take up to like three months or so I think before they started coming.

I don't want to feel guilty about canceling.

But I feel guilty right now for buying. So I guess now I need to cancel if I can and it is better to feel guilty while my family is NOT hurting than it is to feel guilty and be hurting my family.

Anytime Mama.......

I guess I am (was) a lot like you. I tended to be a sucker for a good story. The girl that came to my house said she was trying to raise money to go to college. She was so pleasant and so polite...I got sucked right in. I too, thought it was wayyy to much money for magazines but I had already agreed before I learned how much it was....and being the people pleasing codep that I was, I felt obligated.

After being screwed the way I was and finding out that 144 other people called the Better Business Bureau about the SAME company....I was pissed. Needless to say, it hasn't happened again.

I still don't know to this day if the girl that came to my house was in on it or if she got screwed herself (I have a feeling she did get screwed...the check was cashed in Calif. and I am in RI) but now, no matter how polite they are....I say "no, thank you".

Good luck....I hope you have a better experience.

Lolli, I looked up some stuff about magazine scams, and found this company's name, wouldn't you know it.

It seems that they promise these kids like $20 a day during training and if they decide to quit, they get a bus ride home. But when three kids quit in Temple, TX far from home, they were abandoned and left to fend for themselves, that bus ticket never came through. The kids are apparently scammed as much as us.

I too am a people pleasing codep. So I did feel obligated just like you said after all her sweet talking and I should have asked the price before consenting to buy. That is a lesson learned I guess.

I don't know if I should just put a stop payment on the check and then go ahead and send in the cancellation slip as well, just in case they try to cash my check anyhow.

It will cost me 20 but hey, what's 20 compared to 142, right. Plus, I bet I can get those magazines cheaper buying them one by one through the publisher. And I won't have to pay for them all at once and my house payment can be paid 😉

You have a very caring heart Mamabear, which makes you special. Unfortunately for us, there will always be people out there waiting for the chance to take advantage of that kind heart.

I would definately cancel the check....the sooner the better. I'd rather you learn a lesson for $20 than $142.

Love,
Lolli

wouldn't you know that the stuff on the carbon copies doesn't go all the way through to the form!

Oh well, I wrote over her writing so it would go through, and I addressed the envelope and I will send it tomorrow return receipt requested so they can't go back on me for cancelling my check.

Thanks everyone for giving me the courage to cancel. Next time I will TRY to stand up for myself enough to say no, thank you.

Love,
Mamabear
