I received 3 $25 gift certificates today at work for a spa. I received them because I signed up for a spa program where for every 10 depositions I schedule and that are complete, I get a gift certificate. I had accumulated 34, so I got 3 certificates. A co-worker saw them on my desk and said I should give her one. Just like that! "You need to give your girlfriend one of those." She was totally serious. I apologized (okay, I am an idiot) and said that I know I'm being totally greedy and selfish, but I earned the gift certificates and I intended to use them all. I'm holding them to give to myself as a 90-day binge free gift. (I have 40 some days right now!) But I feel guilty - and then I feel annoyed. How would you feel?

I would feel annoyed too - but you done good!!!!

stand your ground - put them in a safe spot and don't let anyone else see them - you earned them, they are yours.

as codependents, we do often feel guilty for telling people no - but we need to learn to do just that.

it wasn't bad that you apologized - you did feel bad about saying no - but in the end, you didn't apologize and give in.

good for you - give yourself a treat just for that!

Tell her you'd be happy to share some of your deposition-scheduling techniques with her so that she can earn some certificates of her own....

do what YOU want -- it's pretty rude and presumptuous of someone to do that.. the NERVE of some people...

Jill:

You earned those gifts and you deserve them! That was very bold and selfish for someone to put you in a defensive position. You absolutely did the right thing. As my counselor would say, remove all emotion from a situation like that and respond simply as if you are asking someone to "pass the salt".

Enjoy your spa day!--2b

No need to feel guilty or even peeved. remember guilt is useless emotion. So enjoy the spa, you earned it and you deserve it. She is rude for asking if you want my opinion. Ignore rude behavior.

It sounds like your friend was being very persumptuous and was out of line to say what you should do with anything that is yours. You earned those certificates. You have the complete right to use them excatly as you wish. I see no need for guilt.
Enjoy!

love,
kathy

And don't give in to the urge to go and confront her about her presumptuousness, either! I bet there are people she would never have tried that with - maybe she knows you're an easy mark.
