Hi Friends:

Those who know me know my story and the hard year I had that brought me to all my friends here. I won't go into my story - the past is the past - but I do want to share what I have learned about BPD which I have learned about having a partner with BPD. I'm not a doctor or expert, I just have life advice.

1)There is hope. The study of BPD is turning up new information daily in the medical community. There is evidence that BPD is biological. People with BPD have brain waves that look different from non-sufferers. Epilepsy was once thought to be a mental illness and those who had it were crazy and "doomed" but no longer. BPD will soon be treatable as Epilepsy is now.

2)

http://www.biologicalunhappiness.com (this site "hit the nail on its head" according to the person I know with BPD.)

Excellent, up-to date with the medical community resources.

3)A word of caution.

If you love someone with BPD, that person has to want to change and seek treatment, otherwise you set yourself up for serious heartache.

If the BPD person you love is involved with some BPD behaviors such as cutting or substance abuse, it is best you give them their space and that hopefully they are seeing a doctor immediately.

Eveyone had always told me to "detach" from a BPD partner - and it is necessary - the person needs to find help with medical professionals, which we are not. They also need to pursue counseling by themselves. When they are in the thick of things with their illness, the non-BPD person does need to make tough decisions that are for the best.

4)
PRAY
Pray for yourself, then for the BPD person. You can only save yourself when 2 are drowning otherwise you are of no help to the other person.

Just wanted to share what I have learned - everyone's story is different. Always have hope.

I guess time will tell on whether there is hope for a treatment or not. I've heard of something called Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) as showing some promise in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder but even it isn't 100%. A good resource for more information on this is at bpdcentral.com.

The critical ingrediant in any recovery is the patients willingness to recover. Most bpd's struggle with maintaining that commitment.

Being in a relationship with a bpd is extremely difficult. I know...I tried. It lasted about 6 months and has taken me several years to get it behind me. Its a very serious disorder. Be careful.

Even better than DBT is Schema Therapy. DBT works only 40% of the time usually.
