I am friends with this guy, not close friends really. He is married and is about to get divorced after finding out his wife has been cheating on him. He is really misunderstood a lot of the time. He has some mental illness, but nothing too severe. Lately I have been there for him, just listening and trying to help. Last night he told me he has feelings for me. I told him this is because he is vulnerable and hurting right now, and because I am kind to him and listen to him, he is mistaken the real feelings. Well telling him this made him feel bad and hurt him, making him feel even worse about himself. How should I handle this? Should I have not said this to him? It feels so awkward now because normally I don't feel like he really would ever have feelings for me under regular circumstances. I think he is a good guy inside, just misunderstood, but for one, he is still married, 2 he is vulnerable even if he does get divorced, and 3, I have strong feelings for someone else.

What is your relationship with him, professional, or just a friend? That may determine your response.

I think that it was ok for you to tell him right away. Even if these are difficult times for him, he needs to sort things out for himself, it wouldn't help him to chicken out. And jumping into a rebound relationship is chickening out.

Good to hear that you kept your boundaries.
