Hello everyone. I'm currently in College in a Child and Youth Worker program. We are taking an intro to counselling skills. I need to answer the question...In what ways might advice giving disempower clients? Can anyone help?

Thank You
luv

Because people need to be in charge of their own decisions so that THEY feel in control and satisfied with the choices they've made. No one likes being 'told' what to do.

A counsellor is not fully aware of an individual's life situation - only a client can know that - and a counsellor's advice may not be the most appropriate for the nuances of that individual's circumstances.

Because otherwise clients can become too dependent on someone else to make decisions for themselves and never learn adequate coping skills to deal with their own life situations. Clients may then feel that they are incapable of making their own decisions.

Hi LUV,

You might want to start a new thread - and direct it to Silk. She is kind of like a Counselor to the Counselor.

I will say, I wish I would have had someone like her 17 or so years ago to help me with some really tough decisions that I made at that time. I probably would have stuck with my original degree and contined working with troubled children in the court system as too young of an age.

Good luck on your project.

Zinnie
