Sure, it helps. A non- biased party to help you sort your thoughts, some one to help you formulate a plan of action, and help you to stay focused. A non judgemental sounding board, and based on that persons experience, can make recommendations that you might not have thought of. It is never good to spend to much time alone in your own head, besides I believe in communication, it helps to get rid of any toxic thoughts, and what a safe place to put them. Give it a try, nothing to loose, and only a life to be gained.

Flaggirl, it helps if you are ready for help. You really have to have an open mind when you go, try to be honest about your feelings.

The first person who ever counselled me on a professional basis was a Family Service therapist. What a wonderful woman. She helped me alot. She had a beautiful way of helping me see life in a great big picture.

Years later, she had retired, I saw a psychiatrist for major depression. He gave me tons of medication and very little help with counselling. I was totally disappointed and so drugged that I couldn't see how over-medicated I was and under-counselled.
I also saw a psychologist in the psychiatrist's group, he was of some help. Eventually, I took a little from each of them, alot from myself, weaned myself off the meds and pulled myself out of those depression depths. I faced my demons which were eating me alive for years. I changed the problems in my life (ie., husband issues)

This was 20 years ago.

However, when I was so down and low, all three of them had their usefullness in my recovery. If for no other reason, they helped me sort out the confusion in my overloaded head, helped me realize that only I am responsible for my happiness. If you think you can depend on anyone else to fulfill your life, you're in for a huge let down.

Go get help. Open up your mind and your feelings. Be ready for suggestions on how to beat the depression, sort them out.

Hi, I have been going to counsling for almost three years now and i'm on med. everytime I think about stoping becouse I feel that my friends that no i'm going are thinking its rediculas that i'm still going . For some people do they continue with therapy for years or do most stop going after a few years. I know I still have problems and whether I will ever get them worked out I don't know but I am still trying and my therapist is a very kind and gentel women and she always calls me if I need her to. I am really thankful that I started going but I guess what I worry about is am I too dependant on her or should I try to deal with my problems more myself. thanks.
