I'm an SA survivor and have recently had more intense flashbacks and body memories in my T's office. How long does this go on? Does one have to re-live all the abuse? does it come and go in waves and what about the body memories. Any info. about your experience would be appreciated.

Hey Suzi,

Warm welcome to this site! I am not only a survivor, but also an overcomer of abuse, having come from an abusive family. I went on healing process several years ago using a book about emotional healing entitled "Finding peace for your heart" by Stormie Omartian. It is available on amazon.com, I highly recommend this book since you need emtional healing.

In the meantime, you can benefit from talking to counselor, pastor,... as long as you feel comfortable to them, keep posting and venting here, it helps a lot.

Do not worry, there is solution for every problem! There are many people who have been abused on this site.

Keep posting, I am sure the others will join soon,

(((Hugs & Prayers)))

hey hun I am also a suvivor of abuse. I have flashbacks also. Usualy when i am alone and depressed. I dont know how to control them but i try and figure out when i am having them what has happend that day that triggered that memory. That could often be helpful. Have you gone to counceling cause i know that they have some good aproches for flashbacks that you could find helpful. I also find writing them down after i have them to be helpful. My boys are getting into things so i got to go hun please continue to write here it is a great website

Hi Suzi:

Nice to meet you but under unfortunate circumstances.

I think the flashbacks lessen as time goes on. But, it is very important to deal with this now. If you deal with the flashbacks now, as in counseling, then you will work thru this much quicker and easier. You can also go with self-help books, but with flashbacks it is sometimes to much to bear without help.

I have been completely away from my abuser for 2 years now and I have had nightmares as recently as just a couple nights ago, but have had things brought up lately.

Alot of dealing w/ these is to stop and take a break when you have them. If sleeping, get up and walk around a bit, listen to music. If doing daily tasks then switch to something else. If they are unpredictible and coming more frequently, then please seek counseling.

Thanks for the responses - I'm hoping that the flashbacks lessen over time.. They just seem to keep on coming, though I do get time in between. Most annoying lately are the images that creep in when I wake up in the middle of the night. I've been getting up then, just to ward them off and then go back to sleep. My therapist is helping - but I just think it all stinks!!!

Suzi.... It does all stink. Does your therapist have you on anything to help you sleep? Might help for now, but be sure to tell her you don't want anything addictive.

When you wake in the night do you have any particular thing you do to get your mind off it? I will go play a computer game or come here and read, but then have been awakened often by hubby in not a happy tune. lol
