Hi all. This is the first time I post a message here. I just would like to know about other people's experiences in their first counseling sesion. I am 25 years old, and two weeks ago a decided to seek help to cope with some situations that make me very unhappy. Next monday I will meet the counselor for the first time, and feel a bit anxious about what will happen. Since I made the appointment, I suddenly felt much better and got tempted to believe that I don't need to ask for professional help at all, although I know this is just an ilusion. Nevertheless, I have no clue on how will I just start talking about my most personal feelings with someone I just met 5 minutes ago.

I will appreciate any coment.

i guess just let it take time. if you wont talk about ur feelings in the first session (and u dont have to, it will just be a gradual slow process), u'll talk later. Slow and steady :).
I think for the first session, just let him/her do the talking. That will also test whether he/she's really interested in you or not. The counselor should ask u questions and u'll probably start talking automatically. So i guess, just be relaxed in the first session. good luck.

Good for you for seeking help from a therapist. As you know, there are good ones, and not so good ones, depending on personalities. The only suggestion I can offer you is: You might want to make a list of questions to ask. Get a feel for the person to see if he/she is able to listen, really listen and answer the questions asked. Its amasing how many in the profession do not know how to really listen. If, at any time, you feel threatened, get up and leave. Its your money, your time. I hope your first session goes well.

Thank you for your advise, guest and spirit. I would also like to say that I am very positively surprised for the comments I've found in this list. Some of you are "really" able to help other people. Thank you for your time.

Luis....Use your intuition, credentials on the wall are great but what's even greater is knowing that a therapist is qualifield, not just with degrees, but with experience in dealing with their own issues in life. They won't be ojectionable to share some of their background if they are sincern about YOUR BEST INTEREST. Shop around, it's ok...support groups are good networking tools for information.don't give up....ever

It is your life Luis.Counselors are mostly well prepared, but they are not going to decide your life for you.Look to them as consultants and YOU decide wheather to accept or not to accept their input. They can teach many skills if you decide you need these skills. If you are comfortable with your counselor and if you trust her/him,you are expected to disclose your feelings related to the concern that brought you to counseling.

Thank you Spirit, guest, Iris and Heartfelt. Today I went to the counselor, and everything was just fine. I talked a lot about myself, not having the feeling of "having to say it all right away".

I just felt confident and hope that this will result in a constructive learning process. Maybe there will be a lot of pain in the process, but I hope it will be worth the effort.

Now I have I homework to do, namely, I must write a letter to my father whom I've not seen in years. After all the things we talked about during the conseling hour I believe I am on my way to solve old problems.

Thank you all for your time. To the site administrators, my special appreciation.
