my father needs heart surgery. He has had surgery on his heart before. I just found out he is thinking about not having the surgery for fear of panic attacks he suffered after the first surgery. I am 46 years old and have been taking Xanax for 14 years. MY psychologist said Xanax would also help my father with his panic attacks. where can i find POSITIVE information about Xanax to ease my fathers fears?

Hello,

So sorry to hear about your dad. I suppose the best place would be to look on the web.

Before your father considers taking Xanax, visit the website http://www.benzo.org.uk and then you can make an informed decision.

fff - I am also very sorry to hear about your Dad's condition. Not going through the surgery, of course, is a very bad option. Please ask him to talk to his doctor about his fears, and if he won't, the you do it. It will most likely save his life.

I like this website for medication information:

Good luck!

I am sorry to hear about your father. I hope he decides to have the surgery. I took xanax for 10 years and found it was excellent for taking away my panic attacks. It worked every time. Why not talk to a psychiatrist that specializes in medication and have the psychiatrist talk to your father about his fear of having a panic attack and the use of xanax?

love,
kathy

Dear Kathy, Angel,Take Heart, and Revelation. Thank you so much for all the great information and advice my father is going on with the surgery! He is 83 and (when feeling well) still chops trees and fishes. I hope he will feel this well again. Thank you again Love FFF

You could just look on the Xanax web page and print that up for him. I took Xanax for anxiety when I was younger, changing to klonopin to accomidate nursing my daughter, but I never found any antianxiety medicine to be anything but helpful. I hear the comparison to cancer...if you have cancer and it is hurting you, why would you not refuse treatment? Anxiety hurts your body, hurts your family life, hurts your ability to enjoy your life...it is a medical condition when you are experiancing it for all intents and purpouses. It serves only to help you, and dr.s are really skilled at not giving you too much or messing things like this up for the most part. Good luck with your father, I am sure this is hard for you and hope my own daughter will want to help me some day when i need it so much.
