Gosh.....wouldn't it be sooooo validating to us all if the scientific community, whether US or abroad could FINALLY figure out some sort of physical, diagnostic test be it via a blood test or brain scan which can actually pinpoint a mental illness, be it anxiety or depression or depersonalization???? It's bad enough to have to try and deal with all of this crap- let alone the public stigma that alot of our problems could be solved if we could just "stop feeling sorry for ourselves" and "snap out of it." Afterall, would you say to someone in a wheelchair that they could just get up and walk it they "just put their minds to it?" I am SOOOOOO sick of having a "double-disability" that is to say - the ACTUAL debilitaitng effects of the actual illness is only compounded by society's reluctance to actually admit with some sort of humanly compassion that the illness is NOT DUE on some level to the person experiencing this god-forsaken hell!!!!!!! Magnifies the entire experience with yet ANOTHER LAYER of guilt and shame. I am writing from the US and wonder if any other countries are further along in this? Thanks in advance. (So grateful to this wonderful site - has been a lifesaver in the past.)

Ehm, well, I'm not qualified to say...but what I think is, that some mental illnesses are caused by a chemical imbalance so I dunno, maybe some sort of neurological test could detect it??? But I think most mental illnesses are not caused by anything neurological or physiological but are actually caused by abuse or trauma at some stage of development, be it childhood, or adolecence, or sometimes by a traumatic event at any stage of life (like PTSD).
Maybe someone like worried dad could put some input into this???

Thanks Rev for your response. Actually, your thread reminded me of something I read before about how some people diagnosed with "Multiple Personality Disorders" actually had vast and varied physical differences. For example, (Gosh - I hate that I forgot where I read this) - but it was proven that the same individual with MPD actually has different "alters" whom suffered from actual physical ailments like diabetes etc...that was not present in the "core" individual. Hmmmm. Like you thread suggests - perhaps "worried dad" (or anyone else) might read this and enlighten us as to this dark, confusing quandry! Thanks for your response!

Yeah... it would be great but it still wouldn't take away the stigma or help us get help - both medication wise or therapy wise...
There are people with aids & cancer that can't get proper medical attention so Mental Illness wouldn't be high on the list of stuff to fix until we get everything even MORE DEADLY taken care of.
I would actually rather hear someone say something like "You know... you wouldn't HAVE skin cancer if you would just think happy thoughts!"
I actually hear people in my family & who say they are my friends tell me that I'm using not only my Depression, B.P.D., (Cutting) & panic attacks as an excuse to get pity & be lazy but also my arthritis & needing of a Total Hip Replacement!
Yeah… I guess they think that I faked my x-rays with my miraculous Photoshop skills or maybe they think I slept with an x-ray technician…
If I can't get help with x-rays and doctor reports and past surgery documents for my hip we are ALL fucked when it comes to fixing Mental Probelms that everyone belives are so very easy to fake...
