I understand how overwhelmed you feel. Before I left this weekend, I put four baskets of clothes away as I packed up my stuff for the kids and I for this weekend. Now, why did I have four baskets? Because I never put them away. I felt like I didn't have the time and/or the energy.

I, too, am intrigued by "The Secret." Many of my friends have talked about it. I am planning to look into it next week when I am recovering and not working.

Good luck with your testing. Ours is March 12-16.

Hey S2
I loved the joke about singing the verb and subject. It's funny how even music teachers aren't allowed to just teach their subject anymore.

I've read other threads that you have a lot on your plate right now. Take care of yourself! my thoughts are with you.

Here's the link. It is about an hour and half long and you can watch it online.

I think it is incredibly inspirational to think about your thoughts and feelings creating a better future for yourself.

I am getting more and more frustrated at work still about twelve weeks to go. I seem to be angry everyday and want to call them ungrateful little brats. Well soon the testing will be over and we will be back to normal.

TT,

Sometimes I think when I want to call someone a brat it is because they aren't doing what I want them to.

BRAT= someone who isn't cooperating.

I guess kids just have their own agenda and want some power and security in a world where they feel some what powerless.

And, that my friend is hard to deal with. Five hundred different wills at battle and you are in charge especially for this testing.

TT & Soprano2,

God bless the two of you for being teachers in this society!!!!!!

Soprano2 - you brought up a very good point: do we teach children or do we teach tests?

I think that you nailed iton the head.

To my mind, it is a damn shame that the current eduacational system in the US is set up in black and white terms....when in effect, life is just not that way.

I remember once that i worked with this lady whom taught Montessori school to first or second graders.

There was a question that she posed to the youngsters.....and much to her surprise - she found from their open mindedness that there were actually more than one correct answers. She was heart broken that -because of the way the "system" was arranged that there could only be "ONE" right answer. I think that she felt bad that she had now squelched the creativity of the correct answers which were not part of her score sheet.

Sad. Vey sad.

I have always also found it so interesting that in elementary schools - so much emphasis is put on "what is different?"

For example - an apple and an orange.....what is different? Rather than - what is the same?...well, both are fruits.

You know what I mean?

In a sense, it is kind of like brain-washing - to a certain degree. That there is only one right answer.

I remember once in a high school history class (late 1970's), we had to write a book report. Well, I took on the lofty idea to use the whole text book as the book report as I found many inconsistencies within it's text.

Being part native american, I objected to the fact and notions about the indians being "savages" and how the early "conquerors" were actually practicing genocide.

He flunked me - but I knew better.

Anyway, I am wondering if perhaps there is not a more "progressive" mode of teaching nowadays?

You know, where there is more than one right answer?

True, math and english are pretty straight forward well, I take that back now that I think about such a term as "Ebonics" - because anyway - isn't the purpose of language to communicate?

Further along these notes, I have found that the "ebonic" definition of "play-mama" is an extension of a reality given a broader base of support and caregiving in the african-american culture.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling.

Maybe you just have to challenge the system?

Thanks for what you do day in and day out against these tremendous odds and complications!!!!!!

((((((HUGS)))))))

A small compilation of inspirational movies based on true stories regarding education:

"Music of the Heart" Meryl Streep

"Remember the Titans" Denzel Washington

"The Ron Clark Story" Matthew Perry

"Lean on Me" Morgan Freeman

Kudos to the actual individuals whom inspired these great movies.

Actually we are encouraged to ask questions that make the kids think rather than have a correct answer. That's what they look for when they come to do our teacher evaluations. We are supposed to ask questions like What is anothe solution to.... or What would change if....

Unfortunately the tests that determine if they pass or fail are based on right or wrong answers. and our salaries are based on how well the kids do on the test.

what would you do if you were a teacher???

I try to say screw the system and teach the children.

that doesn't always work.
hence the title of this thread.

TT,

Man, your salary is based on THEIR test scores...didn't know that. That is rough.

Are they trying to weed out the caring, kind and gentle teachers?

We want some teachers that force feed good test taking....great.

(((TT)))

My xh was a control freak. Please don´t underestimate their power to undermine us to the point we don´t know who we are, what we need, what we want... It´s so painfully difficult to build ourselves back after trying to say it´s out love, they don´t mean any harm, we can take it... It´s ok be Christian and think of yourself. If you don´t, you´ll have to do it later when you try to pick up the pieces of yourself. After being left to rot in all regards by xh, I picking up the pieces b/c more than one suicide attempt failed. So I think I need to change and take care of this body and soul God gave me.

AG,
Well, my salary isn't exactly based on test scores but. I get a bonus if test scores rise. Or our school grde goes up. If your tests scores go down, then you might be one of the first to be let go.

thanks for the advice. It's funny because my husband called me in the middle of my anger management class and said, can you come home? wouldn't tell me what the problem was. I thought someone had died. I left my class and came home. Turned he was just pissed at his job. Now I feel stupid because I let him manipulate me yet again. Good little wifie running to the aid of her man. running out on a class that really helps her just because her hubby is having a bad day. I mean haven't I learned anything in the past seven years?

Be gentle with yourself. You love your husband and you went to his aid. Unfortunately, he was manipulative and insensitive to your need. You were taking care of yourself and being in class. Sounds like you have nothing to be critical of yourself for. You showed him caring and he showed you that he is all about him. Its just a day at a time.

I hope your mom is doing okay. I'll keep her in my prayers.
Did you talk to your husband about running home to take care of him?? Maybe you could turn off your phone for that hour???
I know why I am depressed lack of exercise, eating to much junk food and struggling againist what is.
Have you seen the moon it is awesome.

I talked to C. this morning. C is my husband if you haven't caught that earlier. I told him I felt embarrassed and manipulatived. I also called the anger management therapist and apologized and told her I'd keep my cell phone off from now on.

Yeah testing. My poor students were very much on edge. they know that if they don't do well they won't pass. that is a big burden for a 9 or 10 year old.

My mom is getting better. Thanks for your caring support.

Well TT,

I say no loss, because you learned something. 🙂

What did C think when yo shared your feelings?

Well, hmmm...I hope they do well for your sake so you don't have any pressure on you about keeping your job. Good luck on getting a bonus. 🙂 That would be nice!
