I recently saw a psychiatrist (first time visit) and she said that due to my past, she thinks that I am sufferring from some sort of depression. I am not a classic case, so she is not sure what type of depresion I am suffering from. She wants to start me on drugs, but I am reluctant due to the fact that I work full time, and have a 10 month old son, as well as a house/home to run. I was going to try a psychologist, to see if that would help with my temperment, and in turn, assist with my so-called depression. Am I making the right decicion? I am afraid of the side effects from a drub combination.

Please help!

mittenss,

You certainly are feeling what many, if not most people feel when told "medication could help".

It's scary, unknown, and yes, there are usually side-effects, all different depending on the medication.

Medication can be started on very low doses, ones that will have minimal effect, and few effects if you stopped taking them for a few days.

Is it a good idea for you? Have you had a lengthy discussion w/ the psychiatrist about HOW he/she feels the medication might help? It is very important to understand WHY or IF a medication may be an opportunity for you.

There are ways that medication can help, but it can also be non-helping to take something while not knowing the why's or how's about it.

There isn't any reason why you can't read about the drug(s) suggested to find out more about them and also (as you are doing) talking to others. They always start off at low doseges because they are required to and between your own common sense and a physician guidence, you should be able to woek things out. My sister had a very bad effect from prozac and so have others I've talked to. I take paxil at it' maximum dose - it's great. If it wasn't for paxil, I probably would noty be talking to you today.
The effect is not one of something taking control of you as with a seditive and not like being high or in any way out of control or out of touch with yourself. The effect is of not having to carry around a "pain" in your head. Nadolol is another good one. It helpd reduce certain types of hyperactivity. Musicians and performers in general like it because it helps not to have such untens feelings of anxiousness before a performance. not unusual, but still no fun to deal with. It is not a sedative - just keeps you from overproducing adrenalin.

I am not a fan of therapy alone- I don't believe in "toughing it out". My "toughing it out" almost took me to checking out.

And so it goes - research is free. Good luck.

mitteness,

Are you a single mom? You indicated you work full time, a son, and have a house/home to run?
