Hamburger Helper nite! No, really! Here's what ya do for the ultimate beef stroganoff:

Saute a pound of ground sirloin. Drain, and put it in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons butter to the pan. Saute one onion (sliced into half moons) and a container (about 8 oz.) of sliced mushrooms. Cook till onions are translucent. Return beef to pan. Dump in one glass of dry white wine (saved from Saturday - LOL!). Simmer till wine reduces, about 5 minutes.) Add salt, pepper, a few pinches of smoked paprika (or regular, if you can't find smoked - but the smoked is worth it!) and a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce (essential!) Stir, then add the water, milk, sauce mix and noodles per package directions. Bring to boil, add 1 cup frozen peas (thawed under running water). Cover, reduce heat and simmer about 15 minutes.

I can guarantee you that NO ONE WILL KNOW this is H. Helper!

Mine is on the stove in the "let stand for sauce to thicken" phase. Having 3rd N.A. St. Pauli. I really felt like drinking today...got a voicemail from my sis-in-law, sort of like, "If you want to go, it's an open house sort of thing," blah blah blah. Kind of got the feeling she didn't really care if I showed up. Guilt by association for the Saturday thing? Perhaps. But I don't care, didn't want to go anyway. Would have been a bit awkward, and I'm pretty sure there was going to be alcohol there, so...

So pulling out of the work parking lot I suddenly had an image of me on our patio drinking some ice cold chardonnay - and man, let me tell you, I could freaking TASTE it! First real mega-craving I've had. So I rationalized all the way home, reviewing the reasons why that wouldn't be a good idea. Stopped at Barnes and Noble and blew $60 on books. Was okay by the time I got home.

One of the books I bought is called: "Drinking. A Love Story". It is apparently the story of an otherwise successful woman who was a full-blown alcoholic behind the scenes. Hey, with a title like that...I mean, it had me at the "Drinking" part, but - "A Love Story"?? Right on, I can relate to that. I really did love drinking, so let's see how this person fared. Should have it finished by 2morrow nite and will report accordingly.

Anyway - I had a neat experience driving to work today. My usual favortie radio stations (alternative rock) had commercials on simultaneously, so I stumbled across a classic rock station, and heard "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin. Got me thinking about childhood, and suddenly I had this image of myself as a little girl, and then I pictured myself saying, "Hey!" and hugging her and apologizing for not being around. That felt really good, I got all teary-eyed. Poor innocent me, what the hell happened?

Point is, I'm still the same person. And I DO love me. Just cuz I'm grown up doesn't mean that I don't deserve the same care.

Inner-child psycho-babble, but actually true.

Anyway, gotta go have a cigarette (LOL! That'll be next, once vice at a time!)

Hi D!!!

Congratulations!!!

I've been following your journey and I have to tell you that I think you are doing a great job! I always enjoy reading your posts... they are so descriptive... I could almost taste the beef stroganoff!! YUMM! I'm gonna try it!

I've also been meaning to tell you that I was totally entrenched in the drama of the girl who wrote on her boyfriends' car with lipstick (remember??)... You took an innocent post and turned it into a novel!!! I'm dying to know how it turned out!

I also read about your longing for ice cold chardonnay... Have you looked into the Non Alcoholic wine they have in the supermarket? I've never tried them, but they may just help to cut that craving out... just a suggestion!!

Keep on keepin' on, D!!!

Love ya,

TC
