I'm a therapist and have just begun counseling a male survivor of his father's suicide. I'd like to hear from other survivors and therapists on their experiences. My patient's father was 76, and he is in his forties. He discovered his father (hanging in basement). Of course, he can't figure out why, and is looking for answers. Thoughts, comments?

(TRIGGER ALERT - DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THE DISCUSSION OF SUICIDE)

Well, my Dad is 73. I'm going to be 23 one week from today (yay).

You know, I have wondered many times if I would find my Dad had killed himself. In a lot of ways this is a big issue amongst the elderly, my Mom is a geriatric nurse and 98% of her patients are on anti-depressants. This is also a concern for terminally ill patients as well. I wonder if in this scenario, it's about control. There is a big control issue here - we cannot control death, but for the elderly who have been suffering with chronic illnesses, those who face alzheimer's or dementia - there can be a desire to control death, as they have ostensibly controlled the path of their lives prior to death.

There are some good websites you might want to check out about elder suicide:

And here are some about coping with loss:

Hope that these help....
