I came across this sentence or adage today, but could not understand it.
“You can tell a lot about a fellow’s character by his way of eating jelly beans.”
- Ronald Reagan 40th U.S. President- (1911-2004)
What did president Reagan mean by this phrase? How can we tell someone's character by the way he eats jelly beans.

Ras...I have no idea what that means. I didn't realize that jelly means had particular meaning. Perhaps he mean whether you eat them in one gulp, or separate them by colour...what do you think?

I think fantas is right. Reagan had those gourmet ones. and gauche people would just eat them in a gulp and not savor the fancy flavors. Others would carefully put two good flavors together. others would slowly savor one. HMMMm what kind of jellybean eater are you?

I definitely like to savour every bite of it. Hmmmmmmmmmm I'm hungry. I love jellly beans. Think I will hope into the convenience store to get some. Thanks TT!!!

Yes, Ras, like TT says, he was famous for looooving Jelly Bellys with all the funky flavors like "pink champagne" and "bubblegum".

...the movie Wedding Planner has a scene like that. Where the Dr. and JLo are watching the outdoor movie and he starts to separate the jelly beans and only eats the chocolate covered ones. I think they were jelly beans. He said that chocolate was brown and therefore had the least artificial food coloring and flavouring...
Depending on the day, I'll either separate the jelly beans and eat all the orange ones first, then the green ones, red ones always come last...

Well, IMO it means Reagan was an idiot even before he got alzheimers. Yeah, that's a bit harsh..but he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I'll tell you how you can judge someone's character...when times get hard.

President Regan was a smoker; he ate jellybeans to occupy his hands and mouth during long periods of time. He did not want the public to know that he smoked. 🙂
I am not a Regan supporter by the farthest stretch of anyone's imagination, but he was no dummy...

Thanks all for your cute, witty and funny answers. They made me crack up. Fatas, I will try to watch that movie. I think jelly beans are only colourful bright ones. No chocolate included. The kind we see in grocery stores.
