I am in my third year of work since studying a bachelor of applied science in chemistry. I am employed as a lab technician at an industrial plant. I am finding all the things I learnt at uni just aren't in my head and I only remember them when someone else starts explaining them. I feel like I've had a brain overload. My results at uni were ok but now I'm feeling perhaps I didn't really understand the work and I just memorised everthing for exams. Now I seem to be afraid to think and get a blank everytime I try. I am earning good money which is what keeps me here. My self confidence and esteem is getting a beating. I don't know whether it is my attitude to work or simply that I am not interested in science. I don't know what the next step is?

I think the first question you should ask your self is if you find the work interesting. If you are having so much difficulty my guess is that you do not, which means start looking for alternatives. I'm sure that with a degree in chemestry there are many other branches in that field you can step into. Finding satisfation at work is never easy, for anyone, but with perseverence it can be done. Good luck.

Get your books out that you used in school and review some of this stuff. That is ,if you did not sell the books back .Or talk to your boss about some C.E. courses that you can take or a refresher course on this subject. Look around, there are book stores that you can check out. Good Luck!

Teachers who graduate from uni with a teaching degree learn to teach in their first five years. And it may take several tries to find the level they feel they are meant for.

the problem with advanced degrees is they are book learning and sometimes do not stress what you are really going to use "on the job".

Feel lucky that when someone starts explaining you can go..."oh yeah" now i remember.

You stuffed your head with lots of stuff. They probly didn't say...you'll use this- ___________ everyday.

If you are unhappy with the job...change before you are to loicked in. If you like it just learn what you need to know.

I haven't used much that I have learned in school, other than the school of hard knocks. Experience is the key, and experience has tought me to be open. The one thing that has stuck with me is my love of people, and I am never stuck with that. If this is your third year, and you still have blocks, maybe your trying to hard. Relax, figure out if you like this or not, if not then jump, after you explore your options. Life takes us on many different roads, sometimes although money is nice, its not as fulfilling as other goals.
