I'm wondering if any of you believe in these things?

I'm reading the book, "Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield, and am intrigued by it. While it is a fiction adventure novel, it is based on largely on concepts such as our Inner Energy, Life Coincidences, and Spiritual Awakening. Many spiritual leaders believe in these concepts. One concept I found fascinating in the book is that throughout history, our human culture/attitudes have been largely influenced by the spiritual beliefs or leaders of the time.

James Redfield gives examples that in Medieval Times, everything that happened (death, marriage, birth, illness, crops, etc) was either due to God or the Devil. ALL information or interaction with spirituality was ONLY THROUGH CHURCHMEN. Eventually, people began to question everything being due to good and evil because they found that the churchmen were hypocrites, untrustworthy, and somewhat evil themselves. This crashed the cultural structure. History goes on….and other such cultures existed and crashed.

Modern Age (we're still in this), is based on the Scientific Method. If we can't prove something, we discard it. It came about because we didn't understand the world, but we wanted to understand the world so we could feel more secure and control it. The Scientific Method has been very good for this. We feel secure, we control, in fact we dominate, and have become SO comfortable in Western Civilization that we have forgotten that we still don't have the answers to our existence. We are now at such a point where we are devastating our environment (taking it over completely), and in disharmony with other humans in general. Relationships are becoming shorter, and shorter with each generation. We seek to fill ourselves, to fill our needs, we feel unfulfilled, basically, with ourselves, and in turn with others.

So, maybe the scientific method and western civilization aren't the "END" of our cultural human progress?? James Redfield's book gets into what the next progression might be…that there are other sciences and parts of our existence that are less provable, but very likely as valuable as what we can see and touch (scientific method). Not so much fate, but more how past, present, and future are all interlinked very intricately. Maybe our energy affects others more than we think. Every event from the past, has brought us to the present, which will bring us to our future…it's a chain.

Personally, I have noticed many "coincidences" throughout my life…and they SEEM, to come at the most peculiar times. Times of strife, personal growth, questioning myself and my purpose in life. What "could" be? What are the "possibilities" of existence? If anything CAN be, then what do I want, and am I bold enough to make the leap? If I question western civilization, what keeps me under my security blanket? When will I have the faith to step outside the box?

I don't want to dissertain forever, but I hope others can give some thought and offer their perspective.

I think that philosophy from its inception has always questioned our perception of reality. Humans are constrained by two main factors:

1. the "I-bias", which stems from the fact that we can only perceive one true point of view, mine.

2. linear time perception: we live our lives in a line stretching from birth and death, holding onto the past and looking forward into the future but somehow never existing in the now.

Realistically, now is the only time that truely exists. The past is only what you remember, and that is biased, and the future has yet to come into existence and never actually fulfills expectations.

Because of these two obstacles, we have irrevocably damaged the earth, we have huge egos and anything ego-dystonic is rejected outright or transferred into rage or guilt. We are insects in the grand scheme of things, no different from an animal except that we are burdened with self-consciousness.

Cici,

Thanks for your response.

You said, "Realistically, now is the only time that truely exists."....that's my question...yes, realistically, the present is the only time we can SENSE, but I'm not sure it's the only time that exists.

Your explanation touches on what I'm asking because Psychology IS one of the other sciences that has difficulty strictly following the scientific method. It's more intuitive than the Scientific Method...but it's not quite what I'm getting at.

I'm not strictly talking about ego's or feelings, or coping in the world, but more about metaphysics and how the human engery/spirit/soul, whatever names you give our vital energy source, interacts with others, the universe, and our consciousness.

As humans, I think we simply react to our consciousness and environment...the stuff we can easily see and feel...

But I think there is a whole nother world out there, that we sense slightly, and ignore altogether. A world that is waiting for us to open our senses, imagination, and hearts to. A world that we have given up on, or become indigent to understanding. A world where there are answers about new possibilities and new ways of being. A world outside of the scientific method, and more of a mystery. One that we don't have instruments or controls to measure. But still as real as the grass and the trees.

I'm wondering if people have thoughts or experience in these areas?
