Has anyone ever been to a Codep. Annon. Meeting before? I never have but I have found a meeting site in my area. I don't know what to expect but it can't hurt right?

I've been to one where they did sharing for a few minutes on a timer but you couldn't respond to anyones words. You just had to tell your own, if you wanted to of course. Nothing was forced and everyone was very friendly and welcoming.

Next time I will try a meeting where they go through the Codependent book. I think I would get more out of it since I am kind of new at that sort of 12 step program.

I go to them.

I have been to three of them.

each week is a different topic - one week they discuss a "12 step" step, another week they discuss the codependents anonymous big book (their book), another week is a topic book and I forgot what the other week is.

each meeting opens the same - with the serenity prayer, reading of the 12 steps, reading of the 12 traditions, then the group leader discusses the topic. When we are reading from a book - we all take turns reading passages. Then the leader disucsses her thoughts on the topic, then turns it over to sharing time. Each person takes a turn sharing and there is no "cross talk" - meaning we don't comment, give advice or anything - we just listen. And listening to eachother gives ME such wonderful insight into other's views, insights, problems and solutions. Sometimes the solution to my problem is in someone else's story. Sometimes I don't think the message of the day has anything to do with me, but find later on that it was a lesson I needed to hear, and it was given to me for a reason.

try it - but try a few - cuz I know that if you want to get a good feel for what it's all about - one meeting won't give you a good read - or it may look like it's nothing you can use.

I drive 1 hour 15 mins each way to get to my meeting. it's a commitment I made to me - and it's on a saturday morning, which is totally inconvenient, but it's sooooo worth it.

try it - see how it goes - and remember - this is all new to everyone at one point or another - and there are lots of people who are there for many years who can understand things like how you figure out what a higher power is, how do you put your faith in a higher power, how you learn to let go - all of these things are things you learn IN TIME - and going helps you put the puzzle pieces together.

everyone struggles with 12 step concepts - even if they have been in it all their life.
