Hi
AAC Friends,

My dear rock dove
Opus was killed last night.

He was such a
sweet soul. When I first met him 6 years ago, he was just a downy
chick standing my his dead mother who had been hit by a car on one
of the highway underpasses. I scooped him up and raised him. He
imprinted on me and so was never releasable. Every time I tried to
release him to a flock, he would fly back and sit on my head
somewhat overwhelmed from all the other birds.

Once he became an
adult, he moved into an outdoor avairy that he shared with a
chicken for the past 4 1/2 years. They got along well (except in
the Spring when he would try to mate with her and she would always
pluck him for his efforts). Every morning we had a routine where he
would fly to my shoulder as I cleaned the water. While I tidied the
aviary and filled their food dishes he would peck at my hair and
coo in my ear then jump onto his feeding platform for breakfast.
When I would eat or read in the chair next to the avairy he always
cooed and danced and carried on.

This morning when
I went to feed them, it was quiet. Sunshine, the chicken, was even
quiet. When I opened the door I realized that some mammal had
gotten into the avairy and there was a very gruesome sight. I just
sat down and puked I was so shocked and hurt at what I
saw.

After crying and
puking a few more times I was able to go out and gather up all the
pieces of him I could find. I still haven't been able to pull
myself together well enough to bury him yet, but at least most of
him is gathered into a pillow case. I just need to let the
situation sink in and calm down from this.

And today was a
day that we are double booked with important events at work and the
staff was counting on me to cover a lot of things. Even with me
there, we were going to be short. But I called one of the guys in
tears this morning and they are all pulling it together as best as
they can. They are a wonderful group of folks and will make it
happen with only minor hiccups I"m sure, but I still also feel bad
that I can't make it in.

Please, just post
a hug if nothing else. I am so hurting right now. I had thought
after Avie died a few weeks ago, I had nothing left to cry and now
I can't stop crying. Opus was one of my younger kids too, he wasn't
suppose to die for a long while yet. This is such a shock in so
many ways.

Yep I
feel with you - like when our chicken got torn to bits by a Fox -
takes time to get over it.

Seems like thanks
to you - your Rock Dove had some great times since he was rescued
by you. You did a great job and he wants you not to cry.

Oh
honey. I am so sorry. Sometimes bad things happen. It is hard to
understand. I have this vision of a ZOO!!!! waiting to meet you one
day at the Rainbow Bridge. That makes me smile.

Big
hugs to you, Chelonia. I'm sorry for your loss. I agree with Anam
Cara -- Opus' life was undoubtedly enriched by your rescue of him
as a baby. Keeping you in my heart.

Dear
Chelonia,

I am so sad for
you right now. Your baby was killed! So terrible!!

His spirit is in
the sky, flying above you always. When you hear a coo in your ear,
he is greeting you with love. He is with you.

{{HUGS}}

I am going thru a
lot right now, too, but wanted to stop by and express my
sympathy.

Oh I
am so sorry aout theis Chelonia. This happened peirodically when I
had chickens and ducks. The worst I think was when the coons had
ripped wire off the bottom of their roost and I heard the
commotion, went out, and one had Foster Farms, my favorite white
hen and I grabbed a shovel and went after it, got the coon to drop
her and chased it into a tree but my little girl was
dead.

sucked.

I'm so sorry, as I
know how shocking and mortifying this is.

Thank
you for all your hugs and support. It is greatly appreciated. I've
cleaned up the cage for the most part. The wooden parts are
probably stained. Sunshine is in the house for tonight until I can
get the supplies to better secure everything again. I found the
place where the mammal probably got in. A friend came over and
helped me bury him earlier today.

Thanks for all your support. I reached out to a group of ladies
I have coffee with and they took it very lightly and said sorry but
then started a conversation about how the way I talked about it
made it sound like some kind of murder mystery. I went home early
because I just couldn't handle it. I needed to be with folks who
understood that the connection I have with Opus is just as strong
as to any other pet. Just because he is a dove doesn't mean he is
any less capable of being a wonderful and loving companion. I miss
him so much. It is so hard to be outside without his constant
cooing and dancing around on the coop. He was such a
character.

I'm doing better
today. I made the needed repairs to the cage so Sunshine should be
safe now.

I discovered that
the nails and wire had rusted where they met the wood (probably
from when it was wet) and when the mammal pushed on the wire, it
created a small gap between the wire and the wood that it could get
in and out of. I think it was probably a raccoon or opossum or
large rat. I didn't notice any distingishable foot prints and
cleaned up the blood before I even thought to look for any. I did
find some scat not far from the cage with seeds in it that looked
like it could be raccoon. I have seen all of those animals on the
property in the past 4 months.

Oh,
realized as I reread my post that I didn't add how much I
appreciate that everyone here understands or at least respects and
accepts that this sweet dove was a very good companion who was
close to my heart and that the support I have gotten here is
genuine and truely supportive.

Thank
you.

HI
Friends,

Thank you for all
your support in dealing with the trauma of finding my dove-baby
dead. I still have some anxiety about Sunshine being in the aviary,
but she got through last night without any troubles. But as night
falls, I find I'm getting worried for her.

Its also so quiet
when I go to feed them. I miss him so much. There is such an
emptiness in my life right now, not just from his passing but from
all the pets that have died recently. But it will take some time to
get used to it. Its just hard right now and I'm
grieving.

A friend and I
went to the movies and for a few hours I forgot to be sad or empty.
It was just focused on the movie and explaining it all to him. (It
was the new Harry Potter, and my friend hasn't read the books. He
has watched some of the movies with me, but isn't really into it so
hasn't bothered to remember the story line or characters. He goes
more so I don't have to go alone.)

Thanks again for
reading and all your support.

Biggest warmest deepest hug from me to you. The kind of hug
that starts at your insides and wraps you up in a love the color of
autumn leaves on a perfect evening just before sunset when it is
still and yet strong, flowing and flowing like love and life.. That
is the hug I would give you. From my heart to yours!

(Chenlonia)

Hang in there.
it's gets better. I had a 13 + yr old shih-tzu. I watched him go
downhill whilst with him, still being ever sensitive to the
emotions I'd experience following the break-up (abandoment) of my
ex in 08.

It's never easy to
let go of our wonderful pets who hsve givin us unwaivering &
unconditional loyatly thru-out our lives with them. 'He died in my
arms wjere he wanted to be. Bless his little soul.

My condolences go
out big time to you. Such a considerate woman you are. Alway the
1st or one of the first to offer support for so many here at ACC
and you do it with kind, understanding, considerate & tempered
words.

Admittedly, I
could learn a lesson from you in diplomacy at times.

All the very best
to to you during this time of loss.

My heart &
healing positive energy go out to you at this time.

Thanks for your
heart & all that you provide here for others on ACC.

Be well!!
(Chelonia)

Chel,

Sorry for your
loss. You did make a good point here. Important to turn to others
that you know will lend a supportive ear.

I know the people
that think of animals as no big deal so I am ready for their
reaction. When I lost my cat, I knew the people I could talk to
that would truly understand the loss.
