Have any of you guys seen City Slickers with Billy Crystal? It is fairly old, but there is a part where one of the "cowboys" is pretty depressed and they talk about being children and just yelling "do over" when they don't like an outcome.

Wish I could do that sometimes.

But then I wonder if I would be the me that I am today. Damn - no way to get through this without some pain.

Hope,

I have been struggling with feeling like that all day today. My toe hurts. I'm getting older. My birthday is this week (January 3) and I'll be 46. I went shopping at the mall, and found myself feeling insecure around all the glammed up twenty year olds. Both my husband and my son are gone this week. I am sleeping a lot. I said some words to a certain person, and that was enough to make my burden heavy. My own darn fault. I guess I am breaking out in humanity all over.

IMHO, pain always serves a purpose. I try to always learn from whatever it is that causes me pain...use it as a teachable moment so to speak.

There are no regrets, only lessons learned I've heard. Not sure if I agree with that 100% as I feel I've made mistakes, but I get the drift. And I make it a point to try to learn. Live is about the learning I feel.

Hugs for you in your pain,
(((((((((((Hopeinhim)))))))))))

There is a purpose for every life; and every life has a purpose.

There is a purpose behind every problem. Circumstances develop our character.

No one is immune to pain or isulated from suffering, and no one gets to skate thru life problem-free. Life is a series of problems. Everytime you solve one, another is waiting to take it's place. Not all of them are big, but all are significant in the growth process for you.

If you are facing trouble right now, don't ask, "Why me?" Instead ask, "What do you want me to learn Then trust God (or your higher power or whomever) and keep on doing what is right.

(from The Purpose Driven Life, chapter 25.)

Hopeinhim,

Wouldn't you know; I had absolutely no idea it was you who had posted this thread, from the title. Can you confer upon me your powers of intuiting? Or at least teach me how it's done? lol

"Do over". I remember that line from City Slickers. Funny, I was thinking of that movie the other day.

Yes, I have often wished to redo my entire life, but then, pain and pleasure, pleasure and pain, they just can't stand to be separated. Take care!

Backspace our mistakes and just rewrite the script. There are many things I would change.

Lass - you rock girl.........I feel a kindred spirit in you. I know what you mean about glammed up 20 year olds..........and I am 32! I look young for my age - it was funny because one of my co-workers would tell patients she referred to me that I am a young, vivacious 20-something! I told her how old I was last June and she was totally surprised! But, I think you are onto something........it is how you feel. You had a blah day it sounds like. Well, pamper yourself with your alone time!

Try not to be hard on yourself about what you said as you can't be at your best all the time. That's where grace comes in!

I won't be posting until January 2 or 3 - so, in case I don't "see" you........happy birthday! Luv, Hope

mamabear,

Your not looking at things as "mistakes" is a concept to me - I am not sure I totally understand. Could you tell me more?

camra - erase is much better!

"Do over" implies doing the same bad thing over again and again!

I am thinking something more along the lines of Groundhog's Day!

Maybe I watch too many movies..........ha.

Happy New Year - I'll not be posting until after this weekend.

I'lll be in the mountains but I will be sure to stay away from any real mama bears with cubs!

Hope

MamaC -
I have the audio CDs of the Purpose Driven Life. I have never completed the study but I should! Maybe that could be a reasonable goal for 2006!

feline - I think I hit the backspace bar almost as much as the space bar when I am typing sometimes!

Especially if I am trying to formulate my thoughts!

SeekerW,
That is okay that you did not know it was me - I don't know that I will always know when it is you! I just reallly had a feeling that one time. If I ever do it again and it is you I will try to give you more feedback as to how I realized it was you. Sound good?

So, what part of City Slickers were you thinking of? Some of my favorites are the cows being able to program their VCR's and matching the different courses to different ice cream flavors. He, he

As for pain and pleasure - apparently the receptors are the same for both. Yes, if I want to experience the sunshine and the warmth, I must also experience the thunder and the rain.

Sounds good to me, hopeinhim. Perhaps it was the word "Please" in my other post that gave me away. I use that word a lot.

I was thinking of that same part in City Slickers, when the three guys are talking about doing baseball plays over when they were kids, when a play didn't go right for them. The guy who was going through the divorce remarked he'd like his whole life to be a do over.

It's been so long since I last saw the movie, I hardly remember it. I don't remember the cows and VCRs; I should rent it. I liked when Curly told about how he reacted to losing the love of his life. Billy asked how he could react as he did, and Curly replied, "My choice". Billy then replied he could never do that, and Curly replied, "Your choice." That seems to sum up 50 percent of life, if not more.

Take care!

Hindsight is 20/20 and i am sure we all have moments that, while we learned from them, we would like to do over or change in some way. Thing is..if we knew how it all would turn out before we got into it..where would the challenge in life lie? Wow...i wonder if that would be a good or a bad thing.

All i can say is..while unfortunately you can't do your life over..you do get a "do-over" everyday. You wake up..the sun comes up and you hopefully do better than the day before. Each day is a chance to begin again...hope today is a wonderful one for you. New year..new life 🙂

I wish I could remember where I heard that from. All I know is that it stuck in my head as something profound to think on.

There are no regrets, only lessons.

I've been thinking about this one. And I came to the conclusion that when we make a mistake it is because of inadequate knowledge, and therefore if we learn from our "mistake" we shouldn't have any regrets, because it was just another lesson learned.

And earlier, I meant to say that LIFE is about the learning...ie life is the journey not the destination. As I contemplate on my past, I don't want to have regrets, and so I try to live my life in such a way that there will be no regrets. I will do wrong sometimes, but if I learn from it then it will have been worthwhile.

NO REGRETS is to be my motto for 2006.

In City Slickers, Curly says there's this "one thing"... and you've got to find it out for yourself. For me, right now, this one thing is love. Or recovery from lost love. Whichever one works.
